G'Day all, New member with heaps of questions. I have a Imola 350 Mk 11 1985 model and when riding and backing off revs I get a real bad whine coming from the gear box area and put revs back on it goes away. Apart from that bike goes fine. Anybody with any advise regarding this problem most welcome. I am only assuming the problem is in the gear box. Regards Ken.

The small blocks puke oil out the breather when filled to 1 liter, so Guzzi recommended putting in .9L  This caused 5th gear to be starved of lube, and it whines.
There is a documented fix for the breather, then put a little over 1 liter in the transmission. You'll need to fill the transmission with the bike on the side stand to keep it from running out.

Todd will chastise me for this, but I filled 13 pages or so when I did the Lario last winter on WG. There are pictures and a tutorial on page 2 and farther down in the thread on the transmission breather.

Yeah, why bother posting Tech relevant posts here... I should just shut this Forum down and direct all traffic to WG. :pinch:

Look forward to riding with you Chuck, hope your back is better.

Whiny small blocks are one of those facts of life. It's partly because they have straight cut gears unlike their heavier cousins. The other reason can be that the hardening comes off the gear teeth, but once this happens and it gets noisy it doesn't seem to get any worse. MIne whines under power in 5th and 1st and has done o for nearly three years.

As Chuck pointed out, the most important thing is having enough lube. You may get some improvement by changing the type. Standard is 80W90, but SOme have used 80W140 synthetic with some success. My thing is to put in about 1/3 oil treatment(Moreys, but I'm not sure if that's AUstralia specific).

People have aslo had succes using Royal Purple or Redline shockproof. I've tried all of the above and I still get the whine, however when I change the oil there are no metal bits clinging to the magnetic drain plug apart form a small amount of sludge, so I'm reasonably satisfied.

If you can't fix the noise with better quality lube and making sure there is plenty of it, you'll just have to live with it. I have not yet heard anyone here with one of these boxes actually breaking or wearing out teeth (some one please correct me if I'm wrong) They can break other things, but that's not related to the noise.

Thanks all for your thoughts Re my gear box problem. Mine does it in all gears and I find it most annoying. Will try a heavier grade of oil and see how that goes. If anyone knows of a fix please let me know as apart from that I do like the bike and it suits me with its light weight ( I am 73). I have just sold my BMW R100 as I just found it to heavy for me now. Thanks again all. Regards Ken.

Me again, Just want to mention that the whine I am talking about only happens when backing off in all gears, roll on the revs and it goes away. Ken. :( :(

G'Day All, I took into consideration your suggestions and have put bike on side stand and put in well over a litre of 80/140 oil also removed breather cap and placed a tube over it and ran tube into a small collection bottle fitted close by on the frame. Most of the noise has gone and the little that is left I can live with. Thanks blokes for your help in making my little Guzzi a pleasure to ride. Ken Cowell. :D :D :D

When I say I removed cap from breather I mean the small cap fitted to top of breather that stops oil spraying every where. Regards. Ken
