I took off my back wheel so I can put on some new tires. I read the production date of my tires and it says 2014. Probably a good idea to change them out. Didn't feel the back end was gripping that well anyway.

While I'm at it I'm doing the final drive or as the manual calls it the transmission. The manual calls for GL4 rated oil. What I have on hand is GL5 synthetic Liquimoly, which is what I put in the gearbox. Liquimoly does sell a dual GL4/GL5 rated oil. Does it even make a difference?

Cold drained it and got 250cc exactly.

The reason they call the final drive "the transmission", is because the gearbox does not change the direction of the power line from crankshaft to output shaft. However, the power takes a 90 degree turn at the back of the final drive, so they call this the transmission because of this.

I thought you might like to read about the differences between GL4 and GL5.

The Service Manual for the 1400's calls for GL4 in the final drive (transmission) and GL5 in the gearbox.

The main difference between GL4 and GL5 is the additive package of sulfur/phosphorous compounds. GL5 has nearly twice the amount of these additives present in GL4.

Normally, these GL5 additives will have no negative effect on components but they can be absolutely disastrous on bronze and copper as they can react badly with these metals in higher concentrations unlike GL4.

I've read quite a bit on the subject , lotsa info on an old Corvair site a few years ago . But unless I'm missing
something here ( not unlikely ) , for the life of me , why GL-4 in the rear drive box ? Are there any brass components
there ? I haven't seen any . And in the gearboxes isn't the a brass coating on the shifter forks (well the old 5 speeds) ?
