For those in the northeastern USA who like all things mechanical, I highly recommend a trip to Hammondsport, NY to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. Among the motorcycles, airplanes, boats, and cars is the first V-8 shaft drive motorcycle (aircraft engine) that Curtiss rode to set a land speed record of 136 miles per hour in January of 1907. I had been to the old museum in the center of town 20 or 30 years ago, but the new museum (which opened a few years ago) on the edge of town is really impressive.

Did you look at the “universal joint” in the drive shaft just behind the engine? Think about how fast that shaft was spinning for that run. You cannot see the exposed bevel gears at the rear axle in the photo I posted. I did not notice the brake until you mentioned it—the book I bought at the museum store described coasting to a stop after the measured distance run.

Here are a couple more photos so you can see the bevel gear drive (in the photo I took of the original image) and both brake and universal joint (in the photo I took of the motorcycle).

In 1911 my Grandfather took his first airplane ride, Glenn Curtiss was the pilot. In 1929 my Grandfather ( Pilot ) is now Manager of Curtiss Wright Flying Service in Rockland, Maine ( you can just make it out on the fuselage ). 100 7241
