Heated Grips Mystery

Heated grips won't come on. I've been working on my heated grips for a while now and can't figure them out. 2008 Moto Guzzi Norge, looks more like a Breva sport at this point. Factory installed heated grips are not coming on at the dashboard (yes with the engine running and driving) The heated grips have always worked up until now. The right grip had a wire come loose so I soldered it back on in spring but never tested it. Was just riding in the mountains this week and was surprised they did not come on.

Diagnostics so far: There is 12v power to the factory heated grip switch and the ground works. The switch works as well when tested interdependently. The grip heating pads read 11ohms and their grounds both work and tested at multiple locations. The grip heaters work when independent power is applied.

The ecu is sending power to the switch and the switch operates. The grips operate and their wiring is intact to the leads under the tank. All fuses are good. There is no wrench in the dash and no ecu diagnostic codes. The Dash diagnostic codes show no active but 3 stored which are 3,4,6. The voltage at the ecu reads 13.4 when running.

The only aftermarket electronic device i have installed is a booster plug which tricks the engine air temp to think it is a few degrees colder. Any ideas? I'm about to give up and install an aftermarket controller. Thanks

I would clean all pins on the plugs and if you haven't done it, clean dash plug & pins. Dash is the controller. I would run aftermarket heated w/Guzzi wiring first, if no dash luck, use a different controller.

Do you get the lines on the dash? Does L/H flick button work correctly? What doesn't work besides no heat?

Immobilizer failure: Failure of
internal controller DSB 04
Air temperature sensor failure DSB 06
Immobilizer failure: Aerial
not working (Open or short-circuited) DSB 03

Thanks Steve. Everything else works. No lines on dash. I have cleaned what contacts I have worked with. Yes the flick button works as I tested it a few different ways. Also tried to trigger the switch by manually bypassing the switch with a jumper. I'm not sure what the codes mean for the DSB but don't think they should have anything to do with the grip power. Really a mystery why the Dash won't turn them on.

Cleaning the switch on the handlebar fixed my heated grip issues. Perhaps your switch works fine on a test load but fails on the load needed to operate the grips. The switch is a pain to reassemble though. Take your time and take good photos if you go that route. Good luck!

Yes thank you. I have cleaned the switch and also by passed it with a jumper wire. If the circuit was valid the jumper should have closed it. I tested the switch by putting a test light on the opposite side of the ground. Also tested with multimeter for ohms.
