Heated grips not working Breva 1100

Hello I have factory fitted heated grips on my 2008 Breva 1100.

Over winter my battery died and when I replaced it the symbol for the heated grips has disappeared from the dash cluster and they no longer work.

They were working and the bike hasn't been moved. I wonder if they need activating or something on the computer/cluster? it is the button not joystick control.

Or am I just looking for a wiring fault?

Any tips would be gratefully appreciated

Cheers

Mark

Mark, Do you have a button on the L/H cluster or on the dash near the hazard lights? If near the hazard lights, it is probably the switch. it is a token effort at best and would easily be replaced by a momentary contact push button type switch. There is not much to the whole circuit, as it's all controlled by the dash electronics.

You do need to hold down the switch for a "few" seconds to activate, then toggle the heat settings. Maybe the switch is corroded either way...

Mark, I know it's a PITA to remove it, but that's what you will need to do. Spray some contact cleaner on it and cycle it a few times to make sure it works before re-assembly. Remember the engine needs to be running for it to work.

If it does not work, I might suggest a waterproof, momentary contact push button switch as a replacement. Use the next blank plug, drill a small hole and mount the switch. Solder the wires from the other (original) one. This is of course, if you can't get the old one to work. I have the same on mine and some days, it's just on strike! Sites like Element14 or RSComponents, or similar, should be able to source something, that you can make fit.

Let me know if you can't find one, and I will have a look - it's what I do...

If all you did was change the battery, check the fuses. Simple one sometimes overlooked.

I can't get back to it for a couple of days but I appreciate your help guys. I did check the fuses in the fuse box and the 2 main fuses. unless there is one hidden in the loom somewhere I think I can say they are all ok.

Tony, I would be interested to see an example of a switch that would work if you have a link?

Cheers

Before replacing the PB switch, I would check the connector at the other end of the cable. I find they corrode, and disconnecting and reconnecting a few times solves the issue. Try and do this with your tank fuel line still connected so you can observe progress.

Mark,

RS Components have a switch 1036280 that would do the job (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/). They also have a boot to go over it (waterproofing) 1036303

Prices are not too bad, that's of course if you want to replace the switch. Please try all the other options first to ensure it is actually the switch that is faulty.

Well it's not the switch. I have checked it with a meter and it works perfectly. There is no evidence of corrosion on the 3 connectors just under the tank and checking with a meter confirms they are good connections. I would be very happy if you guys have any more suggestions. I really don't want to have to get an aftermarket controller if at all possible.

Cheers

well guys I'm happy to report that all is well again. Tony you were right about the switch. Not corrosion but it's a microswitch which seems to have a daft soft rubber nipple to activate it - this has split which means it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I have temporarily superglued it and it works consistently for now.

Apparently original Guzzi switches are available so I'll decide if it breaks again.

Thanks for your input guys.

Cheers

Mark
