Is there any reason I shouldn't install non factory heated grips and wire them to the supplied connectors. I've used under grip ones made by Dual-Star on about 5 bikes and they have always worked great and only cost about $50.

As long as your substitute grips don't draw any more current than the standard ones, you shouldn't fry your ECU. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

I put cheap aftermarket foil heaters on mine and wired them to the stock wiring. They work great.

The only reason NOT to IMHO is that the stock control sucks.

Same here. Wired the low-cost (Oxford) heated grips to the stock wiring and it's been working well all winter. However, it is a big pain that in order to turn on and off the heated grips or change the intensity I have to be stopped and in neutral. Next time I work on the bike I'm going to add the switch that came with the Oxford kit and bypass the OEM setup so I can turn it on and off on the fly.

That's interesting. Mine is a 2012 and heated grip switch works any time the motor is running. Guess they fixed that glitch. ;)

Yes, they changed the firmware in the dashboard to allow you to change the heat level while rolling.
It is a royal pain on the older ones. Even it you change it at a red light, if you accidentally roll a few inches forward and it thinks you are moving, it pops back out of the menu.
Too many lawyers......

Interesting-I have Moto Guzzi heated grips on my 2007 1200 sport 2v and they CAN be adjusted on the move. They work good but not as hot as Oxford's on other bikes I have been on.
