This was already discussed in the Norge and Griso sections but curious if anyone here has insight on the V7.

How accurate is the speedo on our V7?

My guess is they read somewhere around 5% high but a buddy of mine suggested it would be closer to 10-15% high.

Anyone that uses GPS care to chime in?

My understanding is the the European/British legislation requires

-0 / +10% + 6 units.

ie a speedo cannot read less than the actual speed.
but
at say an actual road speed of 100mph the speedo can read up to
100
Plus 10% 10
Plus 6 mph 6
-----------
Speedo reading 116

My recently destroyed 2012 1200 Sport SE was indeed about 16 km over at 100km/hr as compared to the GPS.

Here in the US the margin of error applies to the range of the speedo, not the indicated speed. There used to be a high and low range of variances, but at highway speeds, +/- 4% on the V7's wildly optimistic 140 mph speedo allows for 6mph of variance. I'm sure the actual specs can be found out there by searching some DOT site if you were so inclined.

There are also allowances for other factors- voltage, temperature, etc. Basically, speedos don't have to be anywhere close to accurate. Chances are that every vehicle you own reads high, for obvious reasons.

In the US, the odos have to be accurate. It's to keep the automotive companies from cheating on warranties. My V7R odo is quite accurate. However, the speedos are not covered under the same rules and are most usually off on most motorcycles. Cars tend to be fairly accurate. Most of the motorcycles I have owned were about 10% off. The V7R is 8-10% off according to my GPS up to 85 mph. I haven't had the GPS on it for higher speeds. I have had the bike showing 108 and climbing as I ran into traffic. My RPM/MPH chart shows a theoretical top speed of 120mph at 8000 rpm.
Just as an aside, the books, owners manuals, shop manuals, etc, have the wrong number printed for the final drive gearing. they show 4.825, S/B 4.125. 8/33 gearing, do the math! It also makes the RPM/MPH chart more reasonable!

I have found the one on my Stone to be about as accurate as my eye and my GPS.

I.E. I went out for a test run, activated a recording GPS app on my Android and made sure I held as close as I could to 100 mph on the Speedo for as much as the stretch of road would allow. GPS recorded 101 mph as the top speed.

Now was the needle bouncing around 105 at that point? Yeah, maybe, but WTF it was close enough.

I also spot check it when I can on those little radar signs, again, usually seems pretty close. Certainly close enough for all that I care.
