after starting the engine I release the starter then I hear a whining noise could this
be the starter releasing. Is this an indication that there could be
a problem with the starter??

Are you letting the ECU start the bike or are you holding the starter button until the engine starts? Try just a momentary press of the start button and let the ECU control the start. If you still hear the whining noise let us know.

John, the 12's don't have an ECU start. You have to hold the button to start the bike. They discontinued that option with the new NTX.

If you hear the whining from the starter after the bike is started could be your starter solenoid or bendix gear is stuck. Next time it does it, give the starter a good wack with a screwdriver handle and see if it stops. There was a TSB for the starter to have it cleaned out. It gets filled with clutch dust and starts to gum things up. Had it happen to mine except mine was the opposite problem and the bendix gear would not engage. The TSB is attached below. You can bring it to the dealer and have them do it, or do it your self. Took me about 20 minutes to take it apart and clean. Pretty simple once you open it up.

Starter relay could also be sticking but have not heard of too many (if any) having that issue on the NTX.

Please about the post, in the wright way.

I've been having the same problem and also not engaging, with my 2011 NTX.

The attachment is what I've been looking for, on how to strip and clean the starter.

Brill,
Marshy.
