Hello People. I have a set of '98 Jackal forks going into a special I am butchering...er....building. I was idly wondering if anybody has any cunning plans and inside info about any improvements that can be made to them, how to service them, and if they can be easily be uprated to California spec. with adjustable damping and preload?

Dear RacerX, the forks are 45mm with no adjusters on the top, just the fork nut. Thanks for the reply. Hows your old jackal going? That has to be one of the coolest guzzi's in the New World.

I am in the slow process of converting my Jackal into a cafe racer and when I get my bike back from the Tank Shop (with its shiny new tank and cycle parts) I am taking the forks to Maxton who will transform them my throwing away all the internals, and using their own parts including new adjusters. They did this with the forks on Helen's V11 which transformed them from cheap nasty items into plush quality units.

Richard, the guy who works at Maxton converted the forks on the V11 Tenni that was raced at the TT.

Takes about 3 weeks to get them finished.

Sadly, they will not do business with anyone in the US, something about being unable to buy product liability insurance for a reasonable price. If you are in the UK, however, these seem to be the go-to guys.

But for us here stateside...

I have a 2000 Jackal with the YSS fork valves and the Hyper-Pro springs, and I can tell you that they made a very positive and immediately noticeable difference.

I am using 1/2 turn less than the recommended screw setting, along with 20wt fork oil to get a little more rebound damping and hopefully leaving the compression damping about the same. It sure seems to work for me, YMMV.

Very good, see above. Happy to be of help to get them sorted for you... and my Jack-all is going better then it ever has, thanks much, and glad you like it. It's been quite an evolution of fun as seen HERE.

GMD Computrack Boston (Peter Kates) did my 45 Marz USD's in the same fashion, to the tune of @$800USD back in '03. Are they better? Much. Would he do it again "NO way" -- He said don't bother... just put Showa or Ohlins on. The YSS PD/HP Springs give them a very good bang for the buck.
How much was the Maxton transformation might I ask?

Much cheaper! £340 sterling! Good value compared to the price of a set of Ohlins and custom made to your weight / riding style.
