Flying into LA in a week and renting a bike for about a week. Riding around in LA for a bit then riding to San Fran on highway 1. Might camp one night in Montana de Oro state park. Anyone know about it? Reviews online say it's pretty awesome and looks better than Morro Bay state park.

Sounds like a great trip!

Dunno about Montana d O.

The first time I came to Ca (from Chicago) I rode from LA to SF up Hwy 1 (new 74 Eldo LAPD). Scenic, beautiful, educational... but I won't do it again. VERY long and s l o w ... but absolutely beautiful.

Have a great trip. If you make it to San Gregario Beach (route 84 exit) turn right and go up to La Honda to Apple Jacks bar. Local biker scene... funky.

Thanks Alex! Yea I'm really looking forward to it, can't wait. I'll keep that place in mind that you mentioned.

Did this trip three times in the past few months; twice on a V7. It is a must if you are in the area -- and enough of a reason for many to travel here -- and it doesn't add that much to your trip compared to taking 101 all the way; maybe a couple hours altogether but boy is it worth it! The section from Carmel to Cambria is just breathtaking and has a perfect variety of turns and straights; road surface is good, too. Don't go on a weekend if you can but if you can't, don't let it stop you. A reasonable amount of traffic makes for good fun as you pass everyone :)

This site has a full map of Big Sur area campsites; some of them take reservations:

If you can get into Kirk Creek it's a lovely place to stay right on the coast. If you want to stay a bit inland and take a crazy goat trail there, Nacimiento-Fergusson road takes off Hwy1 right at Kirk Creek and has a couple of camp sites that are easier to get into.

Getting excited for this trip! Unfortunately I won't be on a Guzzi...I'll be on a Harley. I really wanted to rent from Todd, but I needed to rent from somewhere that I could drop the bike off in San Fran from LA...so Eagle Rider it is. Once I'm in San Fran I'm ending up at a wedding in Half Moon Bay which should be fun.

Half Moon is a great little town.
Mezza Luna (Half Moon in Italian) is a terrific small Italian resturant at the end of the road near the airport.
Sounds like a great trip indeed.
