LeMans III fork upgrade?

Good point. The simplest upgrade is to install new FAC dampers, springs, etc.

I'm wondering if someone has managed to install some larger diameter modern forks, like 43mm Showa cartridge forks, or similar. Even 38mm Marzocchis of the same era might be better, but if going to all that effort, why not go more modern?

if you are worried about originality, you can upgrade the forks by fitting the internals of a modern showa fork.
on my le mans 2 i fitted showa cartridges from a VFR inside the guzzi stanchions.
cbr or VFR forks can be bought cheaply , and are way superior to the original guzzi stuff, or the FAC dampers.
i ended up paying 50 euro for vfr forks , the only tricky bit of the conversion was cutting the new threads on the fork tops.

if you are not worried about originality , get modern forks.
any modern japanese fork will do
nowadays forks have nice teflon coated bearing bushes , the original guzzi efford is just a reamed piece of alloy.
so modern forks operate with way less stickslip than your old guzzi , or marzocchi forks.
