I joined this group a few months ago, and about that time while prepping/checking the LeMans for a trip to L.A. to join the Sunday Rock Store group, I discovered debris on the transmission filler plug magnet. It didn't take long to determine that a tear down was required. The found culprit(s) were both bearings at each end of the output shaft. The front transmission tapered two piece bearing race was showing a crack and at the opposite end, the one piece roller bearing cage was beginning to "shred". The debris found on the magnet was from the shredding cage. The worst part about this exercise was all the work, especially co's I opted to drop the entire subframe with transmissing and motor for deep cleaning and paint touch up which always seems to happen. A local bearing house was able to supply each bearing and not the flimsy plastic cage ones now sold by most parts houses. The best part about this exercise was that I'm now confirmed as proud owner of one of those GUZZI factory issue straight cut, close ratio racing gearboxes which at some earlier point either came that way installed by the factory or was installed by the first owner. This was suspected anyway co's of the bikes tedious launch nature in traffic plus ease of how the bike reaches freeway speeds in first gear.
Now the LeMans is nicer than ever and I'm hoping to make it up from San Diego during the summer. B.T.W., the provenance of this bike indicates it was raced by a novice rider until it went into storage in 1984 and probably why (I'm hoping) the transmission had these problems. Moral of story is that it's good to stay on top of these things!
