Hi, first post here. My rider and me run vintage type Triumph 650's in land speed racing. We do quite well ,ECTA record holder, but we want to get into more speed but still stay in the modified production push rod class. At Bonneville "naked" Guzzis hold the record at 137 and 157 MPH,750 and 1000 cc class.
We race on the East coast mile and mile and a half standing start paved tracks. No need to tell you this is also Harley territory
So we are thinking about a modified Guzzi for the 750 or 1000 cc classes. We are experienced builders but could use some information on Guzzi performance modifications.
Thanks for any help

Welcome to the world of Guzzi guys, this leg of the forum is only frequented by a few, bit of a specialist breed Guzzi racers are.
(Although we all think we're fast).

Get hold of the Guzzi bible called "Guzziology" by Richard somebody? Its got all the relevant info for the older 2 valve stuff like "this goes with that - at Susan's".

Anything stated by Pete Roper can generally be accepted as Gospel. He's the tranny guru here and what he don't know .....................

There are a few salt encrusted ol' farts here so you might be classed as the enemy
not really, Guzzisti and old time racers usually stick together like shite to a blanket.

Don't twin plug your heads, you'll get busted and bumped to a different class, already happened last year to a member here.

Cheers

Thanks, the book seems readily available,a good place to start. I'm not so much the enemy here if I stay with the ECTA  SCTA and ECTA use the same rules pretty much rules and I believe stuff like twin plugs would be illegal in Production class only.... We're looking at Modified Production

Hey Rough welcome to fun in the sun!

I've been doing the LSR thing for a few years on a Guzzi. We run 750cc P-PP class. The bike is a 73 V7 Sport.

Worldsfastest4-1.jpg

We bumped Big D's (Texas) Norton Commando record up about 1 MPH... and he did it to us again last year.

But enough about our bike...

What do you want to do? LSR has rules, of course. The P-PP class (Production frame, production push rod engine) is strict. My friends say it's "The Liars and Cheaters" class. ALL modifications must be out of sight.

Get the rule book.

You need to be a member of a sanctioned club to be official.

About the bike. All sorts of ideas have been tried. I have tried everything my bank account will allow. Seems my best speeds come from LOTS of effort and sheer luck... but since you alreay race, you are already aware of that.

Here's an interesting site:

http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php

As mentioned previously, dual plugging is verboten (if caught) in P-PP if not OEM. In our case it probably isn't :?

This is TOP SPEED THRU THE TRAPS racing. In our class (P-PP) it's 3 miles at Bonneville and 1.3 miles at El Mirage in the Mojave (HOT HOT HOT)

Well please post here or drop me a note at h.balogi@sbcglobal.net if you have any questions or if there is any way I can help.

If you are roaming around in Utah in August (whadia nuts?) stop on by the salt flats and check us out. I'll be there giving it my personal hell as ususal.

Hi,I have a current SCTA rule book because the ECTA uses the same rules. I like the modified production class we run our Triumphs in.I suppose the stripped naked bike looks appeals to me.
We been looking at a few round fin SP 1000's. I don't know if there are the best but the bikes are reasonably priced. Maybe the later square fin engine are better to build? I'm waiting for the "Guzziology" book to arrive so I have more info.
To push a naked bike to around 150 MPH takes about 85 crankshaft HP or 1.5 HP per cubic inch on 1000 Guzzi . I have no problem getting 60 reliable HP from the 1930's Hemi head design of the 40 inch Triumph. So I figure typical hot rod techniques, more compression, cam, carb ,precise valve job and attention to detail should get me there. I just have to learn what a Guzzi likes and the limits of reliability so my rider doesn't run over the crankshaft. My rider / friend / he who pays ,and me are excited about building a bike.A stripped Guzzi with the massive powerplant and that V8 sound is hard to resist.

ahhh ECTA ... sorry I didn't catch that in your 1st post.

750 M-PF and M-PG (Fuel & Gas) are currenly held by Pepperoni Bro's 750 V7 Sport. 138.491 and 137.872 MPH repectively.

This is a very different class than I am experienced in. Twin pluging, obvious carb mods. etc are accpetd I think.

If you are interested in a set of dual plugged heads lemme know. The heads were done by Phil Wyatt... a very sucessful South Ca. specialist. Bill Ross (another LSR Guzzi racer) introduced me to Phil and I like his work.
The heads were tagged last year causeing a short stint in MPG class for me. ( I am NOT competitive in that class).

I have a new set of single plug heads getn' the glue and screw from Mike Rich. The goal is back to P-PP for me.

Lemme know if there is anything I can do to help.

See ya on the salt some day.

Alex

Thanks for the info.... We had planned Bonneville this year... But instead we going to build a Guzzi.

Around 1990 I bought a 76 LeMans for fairly cheap money because it showed very hard use.L learned about the quirks...Interesting machine ,it occupied it's own space in time...

Great bike indeed. Makes me ride a little too agressively in pulbic though. I ride something more of a parade bike daily now.

What do you thinkl of Bub?
http://www.speedtrialsbybub.com/2011_event/index-2011.html
The class differences between AMA and BNI would be too costly for me.

Welcome to the forum! Please post your progress. Hope to see ya on the salt next year... or maybe at World Finals this year?
