missing bottom spacer for speedo

Morning. Tried searching the forum, without success, for the answer. I have pulled the speedo drive out on my 850t. I did so carefully so as not to dislodge the bottom unsecured spacer, but lo and behold, said spacer was not there. Visually there was no sign of it in transmission box, and my fishing for it with a magnet got no bites. I feel pretty confident that it simply was long gone before I pulled the drive. Obviously though, I am concerned that I may be wrong about that, and the washer/spacer is free somewhere in the box. I have owned the bike for 20 years, the speedo has always worked fine in that time. A few years back I had a mechanic (a disorganized ass, as it turned out) do some work that required pulling off the transmission and it is my belief that he did not reinstall that spacer. If I had nothing but time, I'd pull it apart and confirm, but I don't. Am I destined for heartache?

Probably not. If you removed the speedometer drive and the seal and can't see the spacer, and the output bearing isn't damaged, then it probably wasn't there. I would get one for when you assemble. The way I install them is to place a wire down the hole, then drop the spacer along the wire (wire in the hole of the spacer). Use the wire to center the spacer, then install the drive. A piece of steel mechanics wire or heave gauge safety wire works well for this.

Thanks. So the fact that the speedo was working does not necessarily indicate that the spacer had to have been there? In other words, the speedo will function well enough without the spacer, for atleast a few hundred miles? (The bike is only lightly used.) I am not worried about the speedo itself, gears, etc, all look fine, and I will replace the spacer. What concerns me is where is that spacer likely to go, if its loose in the box. Seems like it would slide to the bottom and out of harms way. Wishful thinking? Next winter, I plan on opening the transmission and rebuilding....

That washer would have to get past a washer and double ball bearing to get into the gearbox. It probably was left out.
