How about 136 MPH on this in 1907? See the thread on the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum for details (under Regional, United States). It has a V-8 aircraft engine and shaft drive.

Those are interesting, but when I was in Scandinavia, I was exposed to ice racing.

THAT is the most intense and seriously GIGANTIC BRASS BALLS of all motorcycling. If you haven't see it, you won't believe it.

The tires have giant 3cm spikes coming out of them and they race on the ICE.

It's INSANE! Fun as hell to watch, but absolutely INSANE...

Yes, the traction they get from those spiked tires and cornering speeds are incredible. It would not be good to crash and get run over by another rider.

When I was stationed at Ft. Devens we held ice races out on the range area (I was the NCOIC opf the game warden section of the MP Company). One of the riders did go down and was run over. It was so cold he didn't bleed much due to vessel constriction. I had to tell the ambulace crew to keep the ambulance cold so he wouldn't bleed.

Spent over 3 decades in Ottawa and had the pleasure of watching many ice races on Dows Lake in the
70's , lean angles were amazing :) . Hot coffee and beaver-tails (to keep you warm) , a real Ottawa valley treat ! Peter

That's funny, I was going to mention Dow's Lake. My brother raced bikes in the early to mid 60's, mainly a Vincent Black Shadow. He never ice raced on Dow's Lake. A couple of friend's however did. One year his buddy finished in the top 3 but was disqualified for having illegal studs. I watched a lot of the ice races there as a kid in the late sixties. We lived quite close to the lake in Ottawa South.
Dow's Lake is in the center of Ottawa and was formed when the Rideau Canal was constructed in 1832.
