Hi All,

I bought a 14 Stelvio NTX with 3000 miles on it on Tuesday. Previous bike was a V-Strom 1000. The Stelvio has put the biggest grin on my face in the 300 miles of so I have done since picking it up.

I am off to Italy at the end of next week.

Turning into my road tonight, the red triangle started flashing and the SERVICE lettering came up. I have three months warranty on the bike but the place I bought it from is around 120 miles from me.

Any diagnostic help would be gratefully received. I have checked the manual but it tells me to contact a Guzzi dealer. Is this really the case.

Thanks in advance.

First, congrats and welcome to the GT Forum and Famiglia.
You can locate the dash and ECU errors on the dashboard on the bike (try a search here for a how-to), and from there, if you can tell us if the bike is actually doing anything odd, we can help steer you in the right direction. I suspect it might be the speedo/ABS sensor has gotten wet. A common problem as they are not very water-proof. Let us know.

Thanks, I will have a look tomorrow. However it has (for once) been dry in London so wet cannot be the issue.

Sometimes what else the dash shows, or doesn't show, gives you clues as to what the SERVICE and red triangle mean. They are generic warnings for a variety of faults.
It could be that when the warnings were showing you had no speedo reading. Obviously that would mean a likely problem with the speedo sensor.
If it says something about your turn signals it could be a burnt out turnsignal or wiring to them.
Some deeper issues require pulling the code(s) out and look them up. It could be a variety of things, like a failed oil pressure sensor.
There is info on here about getting to the codes, but if it is not the speedo or turnsignals you may want the dealer to pull the code(s).

It is a 2014. Pretty sure speed sensors are not an issue...at least not on mine and it has been in plenty of rain and washes. Did the service light go out, or is it constantly on now. As suggested, check the diag. codes and see what they say.

Couldn't get to it yesterday due to work and heavy non-stop rain in London. Gone through the diagnostics today and I have a Coil 1 error DC gnd. EC23

I take it that is a ground error but can't find any more on it. Dealer I bought it from is not a Guzzi specialist so I have been told to contact local Guzzi dealer as it is still under warranty. Of course, service departments don't work on weekends.

Check the other end of the spark plug wire that goes into the coil. These have a habit of getting loose. I cable tied mine in place. It is located behind the side panels below the fairing. Also make sure your spark plug boots are not shorting out. Common problem. You will see large white spots on the boot. If that is the case then there is a fix. Just do a search and you will find the NGK replacement boot. If it is not I would replace them anyways because it will just be a matter of time before they do go.

Also don't remember of hand if the coil has an independent ground. Think it does have a terminal clip for a ground right at the coil. Take a look and see it has come loose.

Canuck, thanks for the reply. I have had a quick look (pouring down in London again) and it looks as though I need to take the fairing off in order to get to it. Is this the case?

No, just the side panels (where it says NTX Stelvio 1200). There is a cap screw at the bottom, a nut on the back side, a cap screw under the fairing and then you need to remove the plastic wing. The coil is behind that.

If you actually look behind the cover just forward of the cylinder head and up a little you will see it (rectangular silver box). It will have a round black rubber boot (other end of the spark plug lead), it will also have a small metal clip. That is the DC ground. It may be loose or worse case broken. Try squeezing the clip a little tighter and perhaps check for ground. Check to make sure both are secure. May be able to do it without removing the panel but it will be easier if you do.

In the picture below, you can see the black boot and the blue wire that is the ground. Make sure both are tight. For the boot, sometimes the boot will be in place, but the clip under the boot is loose. Just push up on the wire. THen make sure the blue wire is connected and see if your error goes away. You can see where I zip tied the boot to the wire. I also tightened the clip in the boot a little to get a better grip.

Let us know what you find.

Joe

Here's the update. Took side panels off, boot and ground seems sound to me. Re-set errors through the diagnostic. Straight back with the red light and service. Booked it into my local Guzzi dealer (not very local). He can't see it until August 11th. He told me that if the bike had gone into safety mode, I couldn't do more than about 30mph/3500 RPM as the bike would limit it. Decide to take it out. Went 18 miles on a loop around my street, never more than about 2 miles from home in case I needed to push it back. Speeds varied from 20mph to touching 70mph (slip road to the North Circular). Bike seems to be running absolutely fine.

Any views on whether it is worth pursuing my plan (and ferry booking) to Italy and hoping. Or does this need to be sorted before I go because that looks unlikely in the UK at least.

Is it still showing the same error?. I agree that if the coil was suspect it would go into some sort of limp more or run like crap. Now, the coils are probably grounded just by being attached to the bike frame and perhaps that is why it is still working (speculating). Are you able to see if the ground wire is actually grounded. If you have access to a voltmeter, just pull the wire and see if there is continuity between the wire and bike ground.

You can also disconnect the battery for a minute or so just to see if the error miraculously disappears. All that being said, if it were my bike I wouldn't ride it with the service light on, but that is just me.

Coils are triggered by the ECU. The ECU provides the ground path. When the path opens, the coil fires. The ground error report is probably saying the ECU isn't grounding the coil which indicates a bad connection or a faulty wire.. Is the code active or in memory?

Hi John, It is an ECU code and they only have active in the ECU diagnostics. It's ECU 23 and has an X against it. I re-checked the grounds on both coils today - the error lists coil 1 but I don't know which this is. I also checked all wires into the coils and they all looked good. Also disconnected the battery. Have tried to clear the error after this but it comes right back, same error.

Again, the bike runs fine, just disconcerting with the service message and red warning triangle on.

Any more ideas gratefully received.

The computer is controlling the grounding of the coil, not sure how you checked that.

are the coils fairly accessible? even if it is a bit of a pain, if both coils are the same, and i can't imagine guzzi using 2 different ones:) swap them around, if the error changes coil numbers then get a coil, if it doesn't, then it could be an ECU or wiring, if the leads are long enough it might be as easy as swapping all the connections.

do a continuity test between the wires at the coil and the same wire at the ecu connector.

after that i am stumped, if it was my bike i could tear into it a lot more, but diagnosing over the internet is always a crap shoot:)

I checked the grounds from the coils as per Canucks reply in this thread.

As it's under warranty, I may just chance it until August 11th to get into the dealer as it is running fine, which is disconcerting as I said as if the coils were not functioning properly, then surely it would not run/run rough/misfire? Non of these are happening.

that is odd, the ecu could be sensitive enough of a fault that is not yet effecting the bike in a noticeable way,

i have seen plenty of misfire codes on customer cars and they had no idea except the check engine light would flash under acceleration.

i would be in your boat, if its running ok i would baby it a bit until i could get to the dealer.

Here's the update. The used bike place I got the Stelvio from found a dealer near to them (90 miles from me) that could look at it today. The mechanic plugged it into the diagnostic - it showed a left coil error. This means Coil 1 (and therefore other parts marked 1 on the ECU diagnostics should be left side of the bike - perhaps useful for others). He cleared the error through his pc.

Turned on the dash, red triangle and service light had gone out. He took it for a test ride, no problems. As a final check he looked at the HT lead to the plug, but that was fine.

It looks as though it was a phantom error. Annoying but at least the bike is all good to go to Italy tomorrow.

Thanks for the help on here, and to Tony at Moto Italia at Silverstone. Nice guy who knows what he is doing.
