hello from Vancouver bc! I just bought a 2017 v7 special and have it up to 250 km already. Did a few good load runs up hills but didn’t drive it like I stole it lol.

I checked my oil today and it seemed 1/4 to high as the level goes. So I tried draining a bit turns out it wasent much to bring it down to the highest setting. But when I drained a bit into a cup I noticed a very metallic colour being suspended in the oil. And lots of metal on the magnet.

My thoughts are I should do an oil change. Why not right? But I’m not sure, due to the idea that maybe the factory oil is a special mineral oil or some sort of break in synthetic stuff.

Was wondering if anyone knows?

Also I have this very pungent smell of almost burning rubber/synthetic smell coming from just below the tank inbetween the pistons and the battery. Is this a normal break-in smell or am I burning out my clutch pads? Lol doesn’t really smell like paint. But I could be wrong.

Cheers

I don't think any special oil is used, just 10/60 syn. If that stuff bothers you, swap it out w/fresh 20/50 dino, it's cheaper & will scuff up better. Change filter too.
There is plenty of rubber stuff under the tank, have a look around.

I’ve discovered where the synthetic burning rubber smell is coming from. Looks and smells like it’s the spark plug wired inside the head cover. Will take off the cover tomorrow and see if they are getting too hot.

Does anyone else have this problem? The smell stinks up my whole garage when I come back from riding. Could my heads be too hot? I’ve noticed that sometimes I can touch the heads with my bare hands. Sometimes they are too hot to touch. Could the engine be to lean? Just curious

Was reading on another forum that that the stock plug wires often present a problem and it’s recommended that they are replaced. (Kinda like the stock fuel filter)

I think if your plug wire was getting that hot it would have burned thru by now & the bike would not be running correctly.
Pull the cover & look to be sure.

Hi Moonlightmile,

I see you are in Surrey BC...so am I lol.

I think I saw your bike on the road the other day when I was driving to pick up diapers...

As for your situation, most other people pretty much nailed it.

As for too hot to touch, well, these engine's head ARE air-cool, so they do run a bit hotter..

Also the stock bike's map does run a tad lean due to emission standard which can make the engine hotter...remap when you can.

and since you have a V7iii Special, I do not know if they are still using the crappy plug cap as the V7 and V7ii...but yes, pull the cap off and see if those plugs are tight in there.

Also trace the plug wire and see if they are sitting properly in their respective groove. If not, they could be touching the head and burning rubber...My was...had to jimmy a wire shield for it.

Hey Timmy! Ya that was probably me riding around haha. I’m really liking the fort Langley to aldergrove flats area for riding these days

I’ve checked the plugs, they seem fine but noticed a little bit of an oily substance coating them. Might be the cause. Riding with the plug covers off definitely seem to help to give them more time to air out lol

Ya, I like the backroads of Aldergrove..some nice flat twistiest that leads to Mission...on top of that, I work near by :p...always good excuses to "be late to come home" LOL...

as for oil...what part of plug has them?

Lol I’m always late coming home now!

It seems the entire cable is coated in a very light film. Kinda weird

lol...YA...

as for oil coating all the way...huh, maybe some picture will help? Perhaps some other experts can chine in...

That sounds strange to me TBH
