Hi guys, since I have recently purchased my 4th bike my wife thinks she deserves a second. She has been looking at V7s for a year or so now and I'm seeing some really good deals on '14s right now but the six speed on the V7II is really tempting. She really likes the chrome tank on the racers but it's not chrome on the 16 so it would probably be a stone if I went that way. So what do you guys suggest? 5spd racer and save a lot or 6spd stone? She rides a '15 F700GSL and would keep it for long rides.

Chrome is just aesthetics. 6 speed is performance. I tend to go for the later. She can always purchase a chrome tank or go get the stock tank chromed if it means that much to her. The painted version of the racer is exclusive to USA. Kind of makes it "special".

Is ABS a consideration? Then V7 II.
How about heated gear? If so, 2013 and earlier bikes have a dry alternator with a higher output (smokin' hot deals on those, as well).

....That 6th gear is appreciated otherwise I'd be revving too high.
Actually 6th gear on the V7II is only about 1.7% higher than 5th gear on the V7. Engine revs/mile with OEM tires are 3751.3 for the V7II and 3814.71 for the V7. I've owned them both and I can't tell the difference in top gear. Where the two gearboxes differ the most is at 5th gear on the 6-speed, which is right between where 4th and 5th gears are on the 5-speed. Fourth gears on the two gearboxes are almost identical.

My bike seems real happy between 70 and 80. It gets wonderfully smooth there-like the motor is telling me it's found a happy place!
So,I listen to it.

I also have a 2015 V7 Stone set up similar to Jim's and can agree to the same results

I test road a '16 V7 at the national in NH this past June and I do not regret getting the the 2015 edition.

Gerry

I have a 2013 V7 Stone and hired a 2015 V7 II Stone in Mandello in October. If offered a choice of the two, I'd go for the latter. The 6 speed gearbox works better, I like ABS, especially on this bike with its cross-ply tyres, which I don't have much faith in. The ergonomics are more comfortable, although I appreciate that is dependent on the individual, and the ride quality seemed better; maybe because they changed the frame geometry slighty - something to do with the angle of the swing arm, I believe.

Which of the two did you like better Sib? And why the switch to the V7II?
I sold the V7 and got the V7II primarily for the ABS. However, once I started riding the V7II, I found that I like the ergos better, as well as the 6-sp gearbox. Overall, there's nothing for me to complain about with the V7II, it's a keeper.

The six gear spacing allowed the first and last two ratios to be reduced, decreasing the drop in rpm between one gear and the next. For everyday riding this means a better response, even in the use of torque, and even lower fuel consumption.

Ok guys, I sure appreciate all the input. I was sure hoping you would say one is crap and one is great and it would make my decision a lot easier. At least now I know enough to make a educated decision.

I had a V7 and i'm looking forward to buy the V7ii after a brief spell with a different bike.

Personally I think the improvements are enough to buy the new model but not worth changing the 5 speed version for.

Sure, there are good deals on the old 5 speeds but also in Oz there are good deals on the 2015 6-speeds. Maybe the same in your part of the world?
