Postcard from the Blue Ridge Parkway

Ah the memories, thanks. I have pics from (gulp) 1988 from inside the Mabry Mill there, and Cass Scenic Rail earlier in the day. The pics died online with Geocities. I'll try and dig them up and repost.

I had breakfast at Mabry Mill the other day, and got some good photos. Most of my pics will have to wait until I get back home to process them.

This was today’s situation though… in Cherokee, NC. I barely got finished pitching the tent when…

Today I finished the last 11 miles of the 469 to the bottom of the Parkway. The V85TT has been stellar on this trip - exactly why I bought it!

Check out that “Parkway mileage” since last fill up!

This is the first time I’ve been on the BRP and NOT been constantly fretting over where to get the next tank of fuel (especially since the gas stations on the BRP no longer exist). For those that aren’t familiar, posted speed limit on the BRP is 45 MPH (enforced by federal rangers). If there’s no traffic (and am in a hurry) I can generally find a cruising speed somewhere around 55. On “rest days” like today, I don’t mind cruising at a easy 45, visor-up, enjoying the ride… and views (and views, and views…) it’s not the place to fulfill speed racer fantasies, but it is one of the great motorcycle roads nonetheless. I love it here.

When I filled up after this, it gave my estimated range of 398 miles. LOL

According to the dash, consumption was at 62 MPG for the last tank. And that’s AFTER remapping with the UpMap… so if anyone is worrying about fuel efficiency when remapping, don’t.

Thanks for the "postcards"!

I got to ride it from stem to stern last month.
What a real treat!
Not my first time on the BRP ........... but my first time to get to ride it from end to end.

The long-standing detour around Roanoke was still in place - I think it’s scheduled to be completed sometime this year, but not sure. There was a short detour in northern NC as well. That was all I encountered, however, there were signs up for work due to start in June - all look so in NC if memory serves.

There was a fellow I knew down near Asheville who was banned from the Parkway by a federal magistrate. He still did, of course. It would take special sort of person to keep up with him when he did. Going through federal land, he rode like his ass was on fire and kept his plate covered, disguised his various bikes, gear etc. If they so much as recognized him from a distance, rangers would show up at his door. He was a ghost. Like the wind. LOL
