hi,

currently on a bmw r1200s with a modded r1100s sat unused and looking to possibly change to a griso in the new year. love the bmw's but fancy a bit of a change. really like the look of the griso. have only sat on one so far and not ridden but it fits nicely and am liking the idea of a sit up and beg as my next bike. anything i should look out for when i start looking seriously? i am slightly aware of the head/valve? problem on the 8 valve. could you tell me more. it doesn't put me off as the bmw r1200 engine is a bit suspect in that area as well.

cheers
steve

The problems with the early 8V engines have been sorted, and the new Griso is about as reliable as anything you can buy. It also has performance, handling, styling and character in a package that's hard to top.

But then, I might be just a little prejudiced B)

Thats a nice ride witangamo. I really like that new retro paint and love the wires. What was the fix on the older 8valves? What should I be asking as I doubt I'll be able to spring for a new one as I have been informed thwart we need a new bathroom after Christmas.

Well, everyone does need a pot to piss in. :D

Others here can help with details on evolutionary changes between model years, and you can educate yourself on potential issues by searching and reading on these forums. They've been making the 8V for enough years now to get the obvious bugs out. There were some reports of "soft tappets" in the early models, but as I recall it wasn't universal and there are still a lot of them running strong.

Buying used from a reputable dealer or forum member gives you some confidence, and the unfortunate fact that it's not a high-demand brand means lower resale prices and bargains to be had for buyers.

The great thing about Guzzis is you can do the routine maintenance yourself and there's a wealth of technical help available here if you get stuck. If properly set up, they last.

that's great. i'm quite happy to use the search function but i wasn't sure what i was looking for. all i was aware of was a 'head problem' now i know what to look for and i'm quite capable of keeping a check myself.
