Problem with swing arm service

Hi Folks,
A couple of months ago I purchased a 2008 1200 sport 2V . 24000 mls with a full service history, rides lovely but has lived outside so in need of some light restoration.

The plan is to replace standard suspension with Hyperpro Items.

Replace all bearings.....Hand built high level exhaust.....oil cooler needs replacing (dented)

Replace fixings with stainless Items....Full re-spray (design yet to be finalised...any suggestions welcome)

Anyhow to the current problem.

Once all the body work was off I noticed the swing arm gaiter was split, so decided this was as good a place to start as any.

I double and triple checked that everything that needs to come off or be loosened has been in order to remove the swing arm, problem is the swing arm pivot pin will not come out.

It starts to come ok but then tightens up and any excess pressure results in a bang as though it's been forced back over a thread. It also appears to be stripping some metal off the swing arm lugs when turning it.

Any Ideas ?

That isn't a pin. It is a bolt that goes to the other side. Be sure you removed the bearing tension collar before trying to remove the through bolt. If still stiff, make some home made penetrating oil of half and half ATF and Acetone and place liberal amounts on the bolt near the right side of the swing arm. Have you read the thread in the Stelvio section on the swing arm service?
 
Yes, checked everything and done as per manual. It feels as though the pivot pin (yes it's known as the pivot pin) is actually coming up against something which is stopping it from coming out.
 
Look for a build up of road debris on the left inner side. There is nothing that should stop the "pin" from going out unless something is causing it to stick to the LH bearing.
 
I think the L/H bearing is totally seized solid onto the pin. As you try to remove the pin/bolt the bearing turns with the pin. I think the bearing then tightens against the swing arm lug which makes it jump back into place when you try to put some more pressure on ?

Going to have to work out a way to either unseize the bearing or knock it to bits without damaging anything else.
 
Try the penetrating oil against that bearing. It may take some time (days) so be patient. The bearing is a Guzzi item as one side has a seal which makes them difficult to pack with grease, and expensive. Once you get it apart, hopefully the races are good and so are the bearings. Pulling the races requires and internal puller. The right side is more difficult with the gearbox output shaft in the area.

On assembly, be sure to get a good coat of grease where the bearing lives on the bolt to prevent problems in the future.

I replaced my outer races a few weeks ago by chilling them. I used aerosol duster, hold the can upside down when spraying and you can freeze stuff. Then I used a long punch to drive them out. It made the job fairly easy. I put the new races in the freezer before installing them.
