Repainting tank

I am considering repainting a black stone tank to a nice gloss red (just personal preference). Can anyone offer advice as to the best way to achieve a long lasting, robust finish?

I know there are such a variety of paints systems and methods, perhaps even powder coating.

Any recommendations or advice aside from buying a new tank?

figure on spending $150 on materials if you go with automotive paint
your local body shop can tell you where they get paint and where the closest paint supplier is
the shop can provide all the advice and material you need

Unless you have a paint booth and proper equipment, I'd leave it to the pros personally... or per above, consult your local paint supply shop on a how-to. I suspect by the time you invest in the equipment and buy the paint, you'll be at or over having a shop paint it for you. Glossy reds I imagine will be on the shelf at your local painter, bringing the cost down for you. Ask them about it.

Thanks guys. I wasn't clear in my original post. Yes, I'll definitely use a paint shop. Around $300 was quoted for a respray which is pretty reasonable I guess. I was mainly curious if anyone had tried a different application such as powder coating. I will do some googling and see if I can find out how the manufacturer's achieve a long lasting finish.

$300 is very fair, especially if AU$. Automotive finish paints are very good these days, and if your tank is metal, you could powder-coat, but be sure to see if the finish can be buffed, as that is the only way to get a nice smooth/deep finish. P-C is pretty wavy (orange peel the painters call it) as it comes out of the oven most of the time. Some p-c coaters say you can buff, some say no.

I've had good luck on tanks with rattle can. It's all bout preparation. couple coats of sandable primer, use about 4 coats of base coat, 6 coats of clear, then sand that out with 1500 grit, then finish with a buff job. Turns out looking like a factory paint job. Rust-o-leum paint and Meguiars mirror glaze number 2, fine cut cleaner, show car glaze number 7, then after 3 months hi tech yellow wax number 6.

Take your time any brain farts can always be sanded out, if you get a run spray it all the way down and off the tank...Best method for spraying is light coats and fifteen minutes between coats. The key is light coats, just don't get over zealous when spraying. couple passes and that's it.

Go on line and you can find some really good examples of people who work with rattle can paint and can get factory finish jobs.

Most bikes are kept in a garage so these rattle can jobs can hold up very well, especially the clear coats are as hard as a factory clear anyway, really the same chemistry.

Does anyone know if you're able to purchase OEM painted tanks from dealers? I quite like the Silver/Black of the '13 series.

This whole bike was painted by rattle can.

Its all in the prep. Make yourself a paint booth. Hanging up a couple plastic tarps in the garage or around an easy-up works well. seal the edges with duct tape and use a fan to push the fumes out.

Try Moto Srada Shipley England, last time I called in they had one on the shelf steve.
They've got some beautiful painted tanks on a display stand, and some superb customised V7s. Very tempting, but I ended up with a regular Special in blue. I guess I'm just boring.
