I'd never been to a Louisiana campout, but always heard it was a great time. This year was the year to check it out since it was going to be in Northern Louisiana and an easy Saturday/Sunday roadtrip for me from NW Arkansas...

Thursday and Friday Nights saw me working in the garage to do the final fitting of the hitch that's been sitting in my garage gathering dust over the past few years. Although it was made for a V11 Sport/LeMans by Uni-Go, it took a little work to get it installed. I also took time to rewire the trailer and to wire the bike for pulling... Several trips to the hardware store, the bolt store, and to AutoZone and It was finally together on Friday Night.

One of the downers is that there is an interference between the H+B racks and the Uni-Go hitch. For the time being, I removed the H+B racks to be able to run the hitch and trailer. I'm hoping to modify the trailer hitch in order to run bags with it, but for now it'll just be the trailer...

Lucky for me, there are many great route choices between here and Louisiana, so US-71 and I-30 were definitely "out". "Pig Trail", Mount Magazine, AR-27. great route! Here's the map link: FVL to HOMER Map Link. It clocked right at 330 miles and it was all good!

We departed Fayetteville and headed South on "The Pig Trail". After running AR-309 throught Paris and over Mount Magazine, we made our first gas stop at a little place called Havana...

It took a little getting used to, but the Nero Corsa really performed well with Marcia on the pillion and the trailer following behind...

The next leg of the trip would be mostly AR-27. It's a great motorcycle road with sections of mountain twisties and sections of open rolling sweepers. It's a very lightly travelled road through The Ouachitas that's well worth checking out if you're in the area.

This is a particularly fun section of AR-27: Map Link

The lunch stop was going to be a good one. Someplace I'd never been. Williams Tavern at Old Washington State Park. Sort of Arkansas' version of Colonial Williamsburg, it's a great destination if you're into history and architecture...

We arrived around 1130...

...and enjoyed a great homecooked meal! After lunch we decided to spend a little time checking out the town.

Washington was a pretty important little town as far back as the 1820s and 1830s. It was on the Southwest Trail, an important trade route between St. Louis and what was then Mexico on the other side of the Red River. During the 1830s, many famous Texans and Tennesseeans passed through here during the days of the Texas Revolution, then in 1863 this town was made the capital of Arkansas after Little Rock fell to Union Forces.

The 1857 Crouch House is a nice example of Southern Greek Revival architecture.

Heading out on US-278 towards Hope...

Hope is known for a few things. Watermelons, Bill Clinton, Mike Huckabee, and FEMA trailers!

Holy crap there are bunches of them at the airport in Hope! Talk about a money pit! Jeebus!
841047297_Jk9YC-M.jpg

We topped off with fuel in Hope and continued East on US-278. At Rosston, we turned South on US-371 toward Magnolia where we picked up US-79 South to Homer, Louisiana and the campout.

Well, after taking our sweet time getting there, and taking in the sights on Pearl Street...
841051937_PvwS5-M.jpg

...we finally arrived at Valhalla, the location of this year's Swamp Goose campout around 4pm.
841052460_wEhQq-M.jpg

We pulled up and stopped in front of the Kansas Boy's campsite, parked and decided to check things out before unloading and setting up camp. Marcia and I walked around a bit and enjoyed saying hello to a bunch of folks... Got to finally meed Dean Rose of Virginia, and visited with many Guzzisti I've met before at the campouts... Good bunch of people!

841053197_o4zGa-M.jpg

So this is where I have a little gap in the photos and story! I only got three hours sleep Thursday Night, then five hours on Friday Night. After eating a bunch of that great gumbo and jambalaya, we were waiting on the band to fire up. Well, it started raining a bit, so Marcia and I went back to our tent to rest for a minute... Well, I was out like a light! I fell asleep with everything on but my boots and didn't awake until 11pm to the sounds of the band playing some great blues music. We didn't really feel like getting up, so we laid there for awhile listening to the music, then faded off to sleep with the pitter-patter of rain drops on the tent. We didn't awake again until morning! We were sorry to miss the party at the pavilion, but the rest was welcome...

Sunday morning, I rolled out of the tent and thought I'd snap a shot of our campsite. We scored a great place next to the pond!

Well, Marcia and I hung around the pavillion until around 1030, drinking coffee, eating what was left of the cookies, and visiting... Then we headed out ourselves for the return trip to NWA...

We decided to take another route home. Mainly AR-7. To get there, we headed East on LA-9 to Junction City, then US-167 to El Dorado. From El Dorado, our route would be AR-7 for the next couple hundred miles! It's a great route that takes you from the swampy Ouachita River region around Camden, to the resort town of Hot Springs, and on into the Ouachita, then Ozark Mountains... It's a really great road to experience the changes in Arkansas geography... Click the link to view the 338 mile homeward route: Homer to FVL

841065316_ydecT-M.jpg

AR-7 took us through Arkadelphia, then onward to Hot Springs. We weren't in a hurry, so we didn't take any of the "by-passes" around the towns. Hot Springs was no different. AR-7 is Central Avenue, the historic street where the old bath houses and hotels are located...

There are some great old houses in Hot Springs:

841069306_vveea-M.jpg

AR-7 rolls North from the downtown area directly into the mountains. We stopped at Hot Springs Village for fuel, then headed North over some great twisties! Check out the map link of this section of highway: Jessieville to Ola Map

At Dardanelle, we turned West on AR-22 toward Paris. We stopped for a quick bite to eat and a splash of gas before grabbing AR-309 again, then AR-23 back up into the Ozarks and home... We arrived back around 8pm. A little tired, but a really enjoyable two days nearly 700 curvy miles of motorcycling!!!

Mike, simply awesome man, thanks so much for making the time to post this here. I hope to be able to duplicate a few times myself this year.

Very nice indeed!

How does that trailer behave under heavy braking?
