ring and pinion leak

...noticed a bit of seepage at the connection of the ring and pinion...28000 miles, 09 Stelvio: normal? Expensive? Don't worry? Do something about it? Thanks....
 
If you are talking about where the CARC joins the swing arm? It may be the rubber dam is leaking. If it is the shaft seal, that is a bigger problem. I've had to reset the rubber dam on leaking ones and haven't had them leak since. If it is the shaft seal, that is a different story. I believe Pete posted a thread on that. I believe later machines have the CARC sealed to the swing arm as there have been reports of the sealant oozing out.

If you are talking about where the wheel mounts, then it is that seal and probably the large bearing.
 
Yaas. If you could be a bit more specific, maybe post a pic that would help.

Early CARC bikes had the bevelbox simply bolted to the swingarm with no sealant. This makes removing the box really easy. The problem is that if the boot at the front of the box, what John calls the dam, which is retained in a rather hit or miss sort of way, weeps a bit then you can get a witness mark of oil around the join between box and arm.

If that is all it is I wouldn't be too concerned. Check the oil level and colour in the CARC box and unless its low or discoloured its probably nothing to worry about. Usually if the seal on the pinion has gone leakage into the swingarm is substantial and you'll get oil dripping out of the hindmost hose clip that carries the rear brake line on the underside of the swingarm. Whether this was a design feature made to protect the bevelbox against further damage or just blind luck I have no idea but its a useful diagnostic tool for detecting pinion seal leakage.

On later bikes there was sealant, some sort of black gorilla snot, applied to the joint between box and arm. While this may prevent the wet witness mark if the front boot is weeping a tiny bit it is to my mind counter productive as it makes removal of the box from the arm a right bastard of a job.

Oil can also run down the join if some is expelled out of the breather and blown backwards. This usually only happens though if water has got into the box via the vent and it is therefore 'Over Full'.

At the end of the day it would probably be wise to pull the box off the swingarm and check the seal and maybe re-seal the boot with threebond 1211 which is what the factory recommends. If its dripping? That's another matter and should be addressed immediately.

...So I washed the Carc with hot soapy water, cleaning it down GOOD, and took a nice brisk ride to generate some heat in the drive train... and, very slight weepage, almost nothing really, no discoloration, and (my main concern that it was emanating from the forward, engine end of the business-NOPE), so, minor weepage at the joint? I'm not gonna give it worry...But I wanna thank everyone who piped in....and, fired her up last nite about 10 PM, 40 F, and man does this Stelvio LOVE this cold weather!....Thanks again, all....GDP
