I am new to MG, and almost immediately after buying a second hand V7R 1TB, there was a loud screech (like a slipping fan belt sound) coming from the engine. The dealer took the bike back to fix it, and ended up installing a new thrust bearing and clutch.

So today I went to pick it up for the second time, with new parts installed, and tested (they rode it 10miles with the new parts they said). All fixed, apparently.

But... when I went to pick up the bike, I sat on the bike, started it, dropped it into 1st gear, stalled it on take off (seems very touchy), started it again, and after the engine struggling a bit the screeching started again!

My research on these forums lead me to believe replacing the thrust bearing and clutch should of fixed this. But it didn't.

I'm quite certain they did replace the thrust bearing and clutch. I saw the order, and they are honest.

What could it be? The dealer promised to have another look, but they are baffled it seems.
Could it be something simple like the clutch is not adjusted properly? Or something else completely?

I've seen (heard ) this on 750 Brevas. Also replaced the thrust bearing at the back of the gearbox. Noise continued. Doesn't seem to impact the running of the bike. Did this about 10 years ago and the bike is still going. I know is is a characteristic of the 5 speed. Is yours a 6 speed?

Yes, I too have heard this on many 1TB V7s. If you shut the bike off, it goes away and doesn't return (often) for a very long time. To me it sounded more from the front of the engine (near the alternator). I've never came to any conclusions, nor have I had to explore to resolve it. All V7s I have touched that had it are still happily running along. If anyone figures it out, PLEASE do post on it.

Yep did sound a bit like it was coming from the front of the bike. Problem is, the noise was still there after I restarted the bike.
I'll wait to see if the dealer finds anything new when he takes it apart (again).

It was running just normally, until I stalled it taking off in first. Then, after starting it the motor seemed to go under load, and started surging. Twisting the throttle made it want to cut out. Then, it seemed things let up (engine straining stopped) and the screeching started. This all happened on the stand still.

Hi, everyone, I'm just finding this post. Did anyone ever diagnose the screeching? I had what sounds like the same issue with my 2014 V7 Racer recently on the way home from a regular tune-up service (including clutch adjustment) at the shop. It's got about 7K miles on it & never had this problem before. I find it suspicious that this started directly after they serviced the clutch, but it might actually be a coincidence.

The conditions: riding in town on a hot day in stop-n-go traffic. Waiting at a light in neutral. After about 20 seconds of sitting still in neutral, there's that screeching noise, like a fan belt slipping on a car, coming from the front of the engine. The bike also started to pull forward slowly as if it were in gear. My first thought was that I was being pushed from behind by a car! Pulling in the clutch lever stopped the sound and the motion. Let out the clutch lever, still in neutral, then everything's OK. It happened again at the next stoplight, so I parked and shut off the engine for a few minutes. Rode it back to the shop and it happened once more on that leg of the ride. Despite lots of trying, was unable to replicate the issue at the shop before they closed for the day. Rode home the long way, avoiding traffic & keeping in motion -- had no issues.

Shop staff had never heard of this but called a colleague on the phone who said that it might be caused by the clutch throwout bearing going bad. They said that this wouldn't cause anything catastrophic, but rather a slow decline in performance. They gave me a business card for a motorcycle tow company and said I should check the forums... so here I am!

Thanks, hairy & everyone, if you have any updates on your own bikes.

Mine turned out being failed bearings in the gearbox. The shop who did the service didn't put enough gearbox oil in. Common mistake apparently since guzzi calls the rear drive a transmission in the shop manual and states 160 mils transmission oil. But the gearbox actually needs 1 litre. That's the confusion some most other manuals call the gearbox a transmission.

I would check that. If it's not the thrust bearing then the shop owes you a new gearbox.
