OK, you hooligans: we're hatching another not-a-rally, the Snorcal (Southern/Northern/all parts in between) NAR. It's set for April 9-10, 2011, and will be based out of Visalia, CA, which is about 40 miles south of Fresno. As some of you may already know, there is surprisingly spectacular foothill and mountain riding, just minutes from downtown Visalia. Very little traffic. Lots of springtime green and blooming orchards.
I've booked a block of rooms at the place in the link below, which is $59/night, and within 2 miles of my house. The rooms are under "Snorcal NAR" for Jamie, and remind them you want a ground-floor room, if you do. It's got a lot of parking, "garden" rooms, and an onsite bar and restaurant. 48-hour cancellation policy. I'm also willing to put up anyone who cares to stay at the house, and who can reasonably fit. There is also a decent Motel 6, and Super 8 very nearby.
Remember, this is a NOT A RALLY. No (pre-arranged) swag, pins, raffles, heavy-duty planning; just riding and nightly libation.
Let's ride!!

p.s. The nights are April 8 and 9; the riding will be April 9 and 10. Of course, you can come earlier and stay later!!

I'm looking forward to it

Reservation made. Never thought to tell them SNORCAL group.

Pretty good rate you got us, J.

Thanks, Bob, and Keith, I might have said something to them about giving their restaurant and on-site bar some business. We just need to make sure we follow through... haha.
Last night, I made a bunch of copies of my good map of the area; with those and some hi-liters, we should be able to get around pretty good.....

Rich, it would be dynamite if you can join us!! Hope it works out!!
Bob, the hard part will be selecting 2 days of riding from all the options (parts of some will depend on weather),but these are some of the possibilities:
245 northeast out of Visalia, thru Badger and Pinehurst, maybe hitting 180 and going west to Elwood, hitting Trimmer Springs northeast around Pine Flat Lake and looping around from there. 245 and Trimmer are absolute local gems.
245 going northeast, come back down Dry Creek, hit 198 east and maybe hit the General's hwy going north between 198 and 180. depends on weather.
190 out of porterville is a must-ride, and taking Yokohl Valley Rd off of 198 east out of Visalia and some other backroads (Reservation Rd, Old Stage Rd) to get there, makes a wonderful spring ride. Hwy 190 simply shouldn't be missed, even if we had to turn around at elevation and come back down the same way. You cannot ride that road too much....
further south, 155 between 65 and Glennville is stupendous, as are the roads just south of 155: Granite and Woody Granite Rds. not weather-dependent. can make a great loop out of those roads.
other local backroad gems: Powerhouse Rd, Auberry Rd., Boyd Dr, Drum Valley, Sand Creek, Dunlap Rd.....
As you can see, we have our work cut out for us.....

Consulting my various maps, looks really good. Seems pretty clear you won't really be able to map it out until we get close enough to make the weather/road conditions picture more clear. You have mileage/time on the road in mind at all?

Bob, you totally crack me up!! Of course, I have some nebulous idea of time on the road, since I've ridden those roads quite a bit, in all kinds of conditions, tho always at my BRUTALLY SLOW pace!!!! So your time-on-the-road v. mine, for the same mileage will "YMMV" (is that the correct acronym???? I just learned it the other day....) Secondly, we're still 2 months out, and you expect those details this early????? The thing needs to percolate some.... but not to worry. I figure we'll end up doing 200-250 (could be more) miles/day - totally depending on which roads we take. Yokohl is goaty and slower; some of the others, like in the 155 area, are pretty fast, and you can do 200 miles in what seems like a coupla hours, without even knowing it. (Having no odo or speedo helps with that....) I figure we ride from 8-9 AM till happy hour, subject to what anyone wants to do, stopping reasonably/not every 15 minutes. Remember, it's a NAR - as in No Assinine Rules.
I'll try to have route options worked up, with accompanying tank maps for everyone, you guys pick what sounds good, and we'll head out. We could end up with a coupla different groups, going at different paces, but that's ok. we'll regroup as necessary.

What can I say, I'm looking forward to it, & your post really got me thinking about it, as the first real group ride of the seaon. Sounds really good, & I presume the usual group rules will apply-ie, "ride your own ride", & the faster guys (Rich & Todd if they come) wait up either at a fork in the road or an agreed upon stopping/eating point for the rest, with the map as our guide. Since our start point & destination are the same, all kinds of flexibility. Given the roads, 200-250 miles or so depending sounds perfect. Unless we somehow run in to the Border Patrol &, you know, Outlaw Ride muscle memory takes over.....

Outlaw Ride muscle memory, as in you guys twisting the sh*t out of your wrists and leaving me to do damage control??? Or as in just the regular ol' 90-mph dawdling???? The only skill I improved on that boondoggle was talking my way out of stuff. Not a bad skill to have, however....

hey I just dawdle at sightseeing/smell the flowers pace...I don't know what you're talking about, going fast who does that! ;)

Well, Richard, here's your chance to smell the flowers..... Coupla shots taken this weekend on some potential NAR routes. Smilin' Regina was part of the scouting party.
