Sport Luggage Question

I have a 2v 1200 Sport which is now my main bike for my European jaunts. However, it has no luggage facility on it. Looked at Moto Guzzi panniers but £1,200 a pair, that's a non starter.

So what are the alternatives? It seems not much apart from a Moto Guzzi OE rackm the Ventura rack system, or soft "throw over panniers (the latter I am not very keen on). Both aren't that expensive and can be left fitted to the bike all year round )I will sometimes use it to commute to work in Central London (where panniers are a hindrance).

Any suggestions?

You can buy Hepco Becker racks and bags as an option. I have no idea of cost as I put the Norge bags on mine.

I purchased my Sport with the tail bag and tank bag options.

The tail bag uses the same hardware used to mount a top box, once you remove the plastic cover (4 screws).

Here's what I did:
- I got hold of some aluminium checker plate, slightly larger than the size needed to carry a slab of beer;
- I drilled the holes in the plate to suit the top box mounts, and secured it to the top box mount using 6 x 5mm(?) countersunk allen head socket screws (countersunk the holes in the plate of course);
- Drilled 6mm holes all around the perimeter to allow for elastic straps and the like to be used in any combination;
- Bored holes (20mm I think) in a pattern in all the other non-critical areas to allow some weight saving;
- Mounted 4 brackets to allow the use of tie-down straps, if needed;

The result, a functional top rack that can hold one of my 70 litre, waterproof bags using tie downs; the other 70 litre bag is tied down on the cover of the passenger seat (normally no passengers); extra gear can be located on/between these two bag using the variety of fastening options on the bike/rack.

For more important things (like beer at rallies), I can put two slabs (one on top of the other) and use tie downs to secure it to the rack. Seems to work for me.

'Taint pretty but certainly works, and doesn't make the bike as wide as with panniers. Problem is having all this luggage capability, I tend to take too much stuff!

If you get desperate I could do a photo or two...

I use the Kriega US-20 and 2 US-10 bags strapped to seat for extended jaunts. They are waterproof and 40 liters is plenty for me. I have the MG Sport accessory tail rack which will hold the US-10 for daily commutes or I use it with a cheap waterproof drybag and Rox Straps to pack my camping gear when touring. I always ride solo.

Well, thanks for that-I would like to see a photo of your setup Oz1200Guzzi, as it sounds just the thing for me. I'd like to see how it fits and where it attaches.

I have managed to find a brand new Baglux tank cover for less that half the normal retail price, so my Baglux tank bags won't go to waste.

So, half way there.........

Will take a few days, whysub, I need to put it back on for an upcoming rally, so I will photo the whole process. To do this though, you will need the topbox attachment fitted. Stay tuned...
