So a couple of weeks ago, my wife Terrye (aka The Pillion Princess) announced that she and our daughter were going to do a mom/daughter weekend down in Houston...dad was not invited. Never one to miss a golden opportunity, I grabbed my Butler Motorcycle Map of the Texas Hill Country and planned a trip to the riding hot spot of Leaky TX. (pronounced Lake-ee)
Nearly 110 miles WNW of San Antonio, Leaky is home to about 500 souls and is the largest town in this area of the western hill country. Why Leaky? one could ask...well what makes Leaky a destination to visit, is that is sits smack in the middle of the highest concentration of what Butler Maps calls G1 roads. Motorcycling nirvana.
Just three roads, Ranch Road 335, 336, and 337, collectively and locally known as the 3 Twisted sisters, combine for more that 115 miles of incredible biking roads, more than 40 of those miles are the elusive and coveted, G1 road. This slice of heaven is made possible by ancient karst topography that makes for 750 foot elevation changes, deep and clear, spring fed river valleys, and a primal emptiness that must be experienced to be believed.
South bound on 336 near the site of the last Comanche raid in the Frio River Canyon April 19, 1881
Looking East on 337 back toward Vanderpool TX
Just your average set of curves on 335, north of Camp Wood TX
