Being new to Guzzis I see there are V7 I, V7 II, and V7 III. What is the difference? I have a 2004 Breva 750ie how is that related to the others?
Second question has to do with the Breva. I see a parking lamp in the headlight that illuminates with the headlamp but can find no way to have it light by itself along with a tail-light for parking at night. What am I missing?
Thanks for your help in these non-important issues

As to the first question, there are similarities, and many differences. I won't go into those. As for the parking lights, it is by key position. One more click left after locking the fork.

On several of the other Italian bikes I owned this was true but not on this Breva. Locked is as far as it will go.
Any other places I can look? Would still like to learn about the variations of the different V7s.

You are correct. Just checked an owners manual and there is no provision for turning on parking lights. I guess you have the bulbs, but no way to turn them on.

All the V7 series are more or less the same, apart from updates & tweaks . AFAIK , nobody has done any in depth comparisons of all 3.
Just google the various model reviews and take notes.
cheers.

The V7III engine is the largest departure from the earlier small block Guzzis when it comes to the engine. The V7III is a smaller displacement V9 engine, a completely new set of crankcases and heads and most all internal parts.

The parking light is of no use in the USA since Federal regulations here say that motorcycle headlights must always be switched on when running. In other markets, there other regulations regarding lighting that cause Guzzi to include a headlight switch to turn the headlight on and off, and the parking light for, whatcha call it, parking purposes. The presence of the parking light in US delivery machines is simply vestigial: it's not worth the cost of removing it. :D

(Once upon a time, I would go to Europe and buy the switchgear that allowed me to turn the headlight on and off, and leave just the parking light on, because on many older bikes the headlight was still drawing power when the starter ran. On the modern bikes, this has been interlocked in the electrical system and the main beam no longer illuminates until the engine is running... there's no longer any need to retrofit the headlight on/off switch.)

because on many older bikes the headlight was still drawing power when the starter ran. [/QUOTE]

I solved that by using a 3 wire oil pressure switch & a relay.
All current went to starting & ignition until the bike started, oil pressure came up & triggered the relay then I had power to everything else.

You can switch the headlight off on the Cali 1400 (Custom, and probably other versions). I imagine the authorities just didn't know where to find the switch (front of the switch block throttle side).

Are you in New Zealand? It probably has a different switch cluster compared to the US-approved one.

Both my Cali 1400's were purchased in the USA. The second one came from Todd.

Like I said, nobody thinks to look. I switch the headlight off to make the running lights LEDs brighter.
