Updated cam and tappets went to lunch

Naturally at this point we are merely speculating but as mentioned being a fairly new design the failure could not only be the materials used but also how the oil is being distributed to the tappet/camshaft ……. with regards to pump pressure and flow rate or even oil spray angle in that area of the engine.

Basically what failed was the following..the exhaust tappet was completely worn out by the cam shaft, the black hardened area is silver in color, concaved and very ruff on the surface. The left hand camshaft exhaust lobe has deep scratches in it. The intake side was beginning to wear through the hardend surface as well. The right cam shaft and tappets were just beginning to wear the black harden surface off the tappets.

Kurt did you happen to get some pics of the condition they were in?

Curious Dan,

Send me a PM with your email addy and I will send you the pics I sent Pete. The pics are not that good, still learning the digital camera thing and I can not figure out how to load them to this forum.

I saw Pete at the VA State Guzzi Rally and we discussed the issue, the exhaust cam lobe for the left cylinder looks like someone did a lousy job of scrimshaw (sp?) on it. The tappet was concaved on the face and very ruff, almost looks like the hardening or bluing was worn off.

The bike appears to be running fine, though I must admit to hearing noises from the motor,…………. probably just my imagination, I’m gun shy at this point. This winter (Jan/Feb) I'm going to have the dealership pull the cam assemblies back out and check for wear. I should have another 10,000 miles on the bike by then, if everything looks good I will be all warm a fuzzy.

Adding the pics from Kurt's cams:

Cheers
