Upgrading to Steel Braided Brake Lines, but dealer said…

I purchased the four line Spiegler brake line kit and banjo bolts from GT for my 2021 V7 850.

Just got off the phone with my dealer where I’ll be going for my first service and after telling them what I’d like to do with switching out the brake lines, the tech mentioned that they may not be able to do it because of the ABS and that they may need some type of computer (didn’t catch the exact term he used).

He said he’d have to get back to me about switching out the brake lines.

What’s the deal with this? Is there any information I can pass on to them to make this an easier call?

I’m concerned that if they don’t switch out the lines, I’m SOL as going to an “unauthorized shop” could jack up the warranty on the bike (an extended 84 month one at that).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've done many, with no issues. Conventional bleed outside of the rear brake caliper must be removed from the caliper mount, and held above the ABS pump to finalize bleeding. The fronts don't seem to have the issue. Others will also complain about using banjo bolts at the ABS pump... again, a non-issue for ~4+ years now.

Thanks for the quick response! I’m going to go ahead and pass this information on now.

If they aren't capable of doing this job, I'd be looking for a new dealer. Yes, I know. Very hard to find.

Yea, I don’t know if this guy thought I said “MV” when I said Moto Guzzi V7 or what, which would make sense. There was shop noise and all that and this being the 4th or 5th time I’ve spoken to them (a different tech) there was never any hesitation during those discussions.

I’ve been looking around at other options, but there is nada.

The ABS circuit on some motorcycles cannot be completely FLUSHED without the use of a computer program that activates the ABS circuit while bleeding.

You can replace the brake lines and bleed the brakes conventionally sans computer program and have solid brakes. But without the assistance of a computer program the fluid in the ABS portion of the hydraulic circuit will not be flushed when bleeding the brakes conventionally. This is probably what your dealer is talking about.

Nice. Thanks Jason. Really appreciate the information and knowledge share. That definitely makes sense.

Shouldn’t be more than a two hour job?
