V11 Sport Ballabio clutch failure

Well....

That Ballabio's clutch packed it in yesterday. I don't consider it an early departure. The bike gets ridden hard and has had fairly harsh duty doing the daily commute into the city of Boston everyday. After around 40,000 miles, I hold no ill will towards it.

The question is, what do any of you recommend that I replace whilst in there? Obviously clutch disks, but should I replace the pressure plates etc?

Is there any specific manufacturer of clutch disks that you favor over another?

Are there any modifications that I should make while in there?

Thanks for any advice.

Doug

Doug,

The pressure plate, intermediate plate, and ring gear need to be inspected. If scoring on the pressure plate or ring gear, get them re-surfaced. Also check the intermediate plate for blueing and any signs of warping, replace if evidence of either. The springs can be checked against a new one for free length, if any are shorter, replace the set.

Also I'd replace the hub gear with the o-rings and the front Trans seal. No point in running new plates on a worn hub gear. Since the trans will be off, it could be a good time to replace the input and output bearings with good metal cage double row bearings. They are bearing number 5205 or 3205 depending on manufacture for a 25X52X20.6 bearing. I've seen too many of the plastic cage ones fail.

If you have trouble finding the 14 ball 3205AC3's with the serpentine cage give me a hoy here or on the 'Lluminati and I'll source 'em for you. I've got my local bloke trained up pretty well now:lol:

'Ang on! It's a Ballabio yes? Dunno if they use the same bearings as the five speed, I'll have to check. I also haven't heard of a lot of cage failures on the old six speed. John? Are you sure about that??

Pete

Pete,

I forgot his is a 6 speed. I was referring to the 5 speed ones. As such, he probably doesn't need to go into the gearbox. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Well I got a look at the clutch last night. What a mess.

The second friction plate broke completely away at the hub. Clutch material was littering the bottom of the bell housing. There was so much material floating around in there, that apparently, the other friction plate wasn't even able to move.

The good news is, the tranny and seals are still tight and dry, so it looks like new clutch plates, pressure plate and springs and I should be good to go.

Thanks guys.

Run your finger nail along the splines of the hub gear. If you can feel any ridges, you should replace it.
