v65 air filter box, breather hose question

Hello,

I have already asked this question in another thread, but probably because it was long and confusing nobody had time to answer it. I got my MG v65 recently and brought the bike to a mechanic who did all the basic things - changed oils, fixed the brakes, etc. What he also did was he installed a short hose coming from the air filter box, next to the outlet where the "v" shaped hose splits into 2 and leads to the cylinder heads. To me the short hose seems purposeless because it goes nowhere. Can anyone tell why it is there and if it has any function?

Pull the plug periodically to drain any collected oil would be my guess. I would have made it longer with the plug extending below the lower frame rail if that is what it is for.

Thanks John. I wonder what was there originally instead of that short hose. It surely must have connected somewhere...
 
From memory.....
My 87 Lario has a small tank that mounts right behind the steering head. It has a couple hoses from the heads that feed into the tank. Those are the actual breathers I believe.
It also has a hose from the tank to the airbox. That is what allows the tank to vent to atmosphere. And I think it has a drain that goes from the bottom of the tank to the sump. That allows the oil that accumulates in the tank to drain back into the sump.
Most importantly the tank has to vent to atmosphere. It does no good venting the heads to the tank if the tank does not vent to atmosphere.

That's what I think is happening here too. 2 hoses from the heads feed into the air filter box, and drain down to the sump via 2 return hoses (most left in the picture, and only one is visible). Still there is a 3rd outlet inbetween and that's what's puzzling me :) I will try to open it and drain the oil. At least I will see if there is a lot of oil collected in the box. If there is no oil in the box, it must mean the oil successfully returns to the sump, then I will stop botherng about it.
