I know this topic might have been dealt with, but maybe not with the V7. So ...

After 1000 miles on the new bike driving at 60mph I will suddenly get a high pitched whistle which quicky develops into a kind of a whine or screech. Loud. At first I think its a weird helmet noise, but no. I quickly slow down and pull over, all the while the noise continues until stopped. When I start back on the road the noise is absent, but then in 20 min it starts again. This has happened twice. It's very hard for some reason to determine where this is originating from. It seems to be induced not by the motor but somewhere in the drive train. I guess I am reassured that it is not the gearbox since this is an intermittent noise. This noise is much more than the acceptable slight whining and usual noises of a bike.

I thought maybe clutch. At idle it seems a bit louder and "clackier", even for a dry-clutch system. Another clue - when I roll the bike with the motor OFF in neutral I hear what I think is a new sound, that is - a very soft high pitched "whine" even at 1/2 mph rolling speed. I can imagine this sound becoming the loud sound. It is similar but faint at this low speed. Brakes? A brake pad contacting the rotor when it should be fully dissengaged?

I know its hard to offer advise with the sketchy descriptions I've given but I thought it was worth to see if any one can offer any enlightenment at all. I've read some of the threads regarding a similar problem, but there seem to be some differences - including my sound happens at highway speed - not at clutch engage take-off for example. Thanks in advance.

Take it to the dealer ASAP,

I had that noise also, in My case it was the clutch that was grinding something (a rivet)
The noise was there as long as the engine was running,
even at zero mph
dissapeared sometimes when clutch was engaged

the clutch was replaced in warranty
bike had 7500Km at that moment.

Good luck

Christiaan

I do not hope, and really cross all fingers I got, that you're not sharing any of the gearbox woes experienced by Muzz&Nick W, both on Brevas.

The following threads are long and winding, but are described as beginning in excessive whining.
It's easy going a bit paranoid, reading these, but if you're finding similarities, you should see your dealer ASAP!

Nick made a really good write-up on his efforts to repair his gearbox, should be found among the Guzzitech pages somewhere.

Thanks for the tips. It hasn't made this noise again after 200 - 300 miles. I think though I have isolated it to the gearbox. Maybe a bearing that got starved for oil momentarily. Of course now I'm paranoid. A mini van pulling along side in traffic with a brake squeel sent prodigeous amounts of stomach acid to the place in my gut where a hole had been excavated during my time with Triumphs and Nortons.
