I have a 2012 V7 Racer.

I see 2 different fluids for transmission for v7 racer manual

AGIP GEAR MG SAE 85W-140 Transmission oil API GL-4 and GL-5

AGIP GEAR MG/S SAE 85W-90 Transmission oil API GL-5

do people actually use 85W-140 for the transmission and buy a different weight for the spline? I am guessing that spline is 85W-90.

can I get away with just 85W-140 for both places?

First a bit of terminology. Except for the US, the transmission is what we call the final drive. What the rest of the world calls a gearbox, we in the US call it a transmission. So, the 75 or 85 W 90 goes into the thing you shift (gearbox/transmission) and the 85W140 goes into the transmission/final drive. Do use the recommended weights in each box, not the heavier weight for both.

I'm part Scotch and couldn't swing with the idea of buying a different bottle of lube for a 300cc final drive. In our later years, Pepperoni Bros. used Redline lubricants exclusively, they make a product that covers both requirements for the final drive and transmission called "Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil", that's what I used when the time came, seems to be working out fine, good shifting and the final drive runs cool.

Don’t want to be picky but Scotch comes out of a bottle. Whereas Scots come from Scotland .

I stand corrected, that part of my family is long gone but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't realize the difference either. They always said "Scotch", never questioned it.
