V9 power issues - why isn’t it charging?

I have a 2017 v9 Bobber and I’m finding I’m spending more time it’s my battery out of the bike on a trickle charger than on the road. The battery is a bit over a year old as I already had one totally die. So the two issues I’m having (which could be related)

1. The battery isn’t holding charge even if I’m commuting a few times a week. My old triumph scrambler was good for 2 weeks in the dead of winter and it’d start fine but no chance with the v9.
2. I drove 100 miles yesterday and when I tried to start the bike for the third time and the end of the day there was only enough juice left for a tiny click of the starter. Luckily i was close enough to home to push it.

So putting the frequent need to charge and then seeing how it actually discharged the battery over the course of a day of driving, I guess the alternator isn’t doing it’s thing? Possible to easily fix this myself or do I need to take it into the dealer?

Thanks all

Sounds like a bad voltage regulator. The Chinese stuff has been known to overcharge and burn out the battery. Have it checked w/meter to battery. There are alot of posts here on the subject.

Do you have, or can you borrow, a multimeter?
You need to check the voltage across the battery, engine off, engine idling and engine at 3k rpm.

The first two should be around 12.5v, the third nearer 13.5v or higher.
If the third voltage is the same as the other two you definitely have a charging fault. The rec/reg would be my first suspect.

I've gone through 2 batteries already on my V9 and have a third as a spare. The alarm drains it fast. If it wasn't such a PIA I'd disconnect the battery for anything more than a couple of days. I can't keep it on a trickle charger. If I do ride every day it's OK, though, so I think it's charging.

c-Dawg, I've found that the battery in the V9 is toast if it's left discharged for any length of time. Have you tried hooking a multi meter to it while it's running? You could be getting a charge but the battery might be bad.

Check the current drain with everything turned off. To do that you need to set your multimeter to Amps, put the leads in the correct sockets, disconnect the battery positive lead and put the meter in series with the lead and the battery terminal, you should only read 2-3 milli amps. Do not start the bike or you will blow the fuse in the meter. And remember to set the meter leads into the correct sockets before you measure volts again.

Right, I was suggesting he do a quick check to see if the alternator is working, by setting for Volts and hooking up to the battery while the engine is running.
