Valeo starter problems - Cali 3

Hi all

Problems with my 1990 Cali 3: Very weak action of the starter motor, barely able to turn the engine. Battery was old so I replaced it. Problem persists, in fact is worse. Now it won't even turn over.

Battery good. Relay working. Solenoid seems to be engaging: A strong clonk comes when I press the starter button.

Where should I go from here? What is the likely cause? Solenoid "switch" for starter motor worn? I feel it it most likely worn brushes on the motor? Or...

Help with troubleshooting appreciated :)

Jake

The early Valeo starters had a problem with the magnets. The newer ones seem to hold up better, though 29 years on yours isn't bad. I don't know after market sources in Europe. I suggest you just search around on the internet for someone close. All my sources are in the US.

Easy test. Bridge across the two main terminals on the back of the solenoid. It will spark but the starter motor should spin fast. It won't engage with the flywheel though. If it doesn't then you need a new starter, but just check the battery terminals are tight and clean.
Assuming that works, bridge from the top terminal to the small soade terminal on the solenoid. The starter should spin and drive the engine. If it doesn't you have a dud solenoid.
If all this works (which I doubt) then you have a wiring problem.

Thank you all.
Engine turns over by hand. Strong spark but No Life when I bridge the terminals at the back of the solenoid.

It seems I need a new starter

Jake
