voltage leak at starter

My bosch starter is leaking current through the 4 gauge wire at the solenoid, enough to drain the battery overnight. Everything is off, bike starts and runs great. I tested with a meter. Anyone have any thoughts as to how I can stop the flow? I presently just pull it off the battery at night (and after the bike is started!) but that will get old...

Easy way, an inline switch... harder way, rebuild the solenoid. ;)

Thanks, but I will rebuild. For too many years I have kept this thing going with the quick fix. I have seen starter/solenoid rebuild procedure at "this old tractor, between that and the rest of the reference materials on my bench, I will figure it out. Just hoping someone might help me to zero in on what, within the assembly is creating the draw, and how to stop it. The starter? The solenoid? Does it just need the brushes and contacts cleaned?

MG Cycle sells the solenoid for $80. Harpers and EME probably have it too. If you want to rebuild the Bosch, check out the EME http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/ - plenty-o-bits.

I've had it with the Bosch starters. A Valeo knock off if about $100 on ebay - have one that lasted about 10years w/o any attention. A real Valeo is about $220. Blow it out with compressed air every 5 years. Starts much easier than the Bosch, requires less juice. This allows the use of a smaller battery than the U1 size on old Tontis.

Oh, and it weighs less too.

I just wanted to report that I did buy the 8 tooth guzzi starter from motoelectrik that was recommended. While it took over a month to arrive, it took about ten minutes to install. It is awesome! I had been riding with the voltage leaky bosch (disconnecting the 4 ga wire after starting) and it was really struggling to start. Fearing that my teeny new Ballistic 8 cell battery was not up to the task, I have been very anxious. (I designed and built a custom wiring loom around this battery over the winter!) But hey ho! This starter leaps to life and my rig works! Thank you, thank you!

By the way, for those who want to remove the side panels and open that frame triangle, this battery obviates the need for slinging a battery under the transmission. If I get around to it, I will send some photos of how I did it.
