Hi all,
It has been some time, I know. I have an early (2008) 8v Griso that I love riding, but has been nothing but problems.

I have been struggling with CARC issues for a while now, on multiple units. I have two CARCs that I seem to keep swapping for service.

I now have my original one back on, 36k miles, and it leaks It started leaking for the first time probably around 15k miles. At the end of a ride, there is oil flung out everywhere around the rim. The breather is not plugged, it's not coming from somewhere else, although there was an issue with a leaking boot too.

But after changing the seal and it still leaked, I began to wonder. Turns out, my bike has about .020" of play at the wheel rim, most noticeable at the 12 o-clock and 6 o-clock positions, which to me, indicates bearing wear. Obviously, bearing wear will take out a seal.

Does anybody know a spec for play? I'm afraid to ask what the factory says is OK. We all know what the factory calls OK...

Cheers and thanks,
-Andrew

There was an issue on earlier units with the large bearing. Just replace the bearing and seal, or have them replaced.

A very long shot but check for a hair line crack running from the wheel bolt thread out to the seal area on the hub. It will be very hard to see.
I think it took 3 brand new seals before they found out what the problem was. Still have it in a draw as a reminder.

You had a Boot failure SC?
I thought I was the only one!!

Happened to mine last Oct, in Spain, about 4 hrs into a 2-day dash from Lisbon to Caen.
No idea what caused it, although I did hit a series of really bad ripples in the Tarmac at around 85mph.
The CARC was at 52°C at the time (I have a Temp Sensor in the Fill Plug), so I'm thinking the Rubber was fairly 'soft' and flexible, and the violent jarring caused it to get pinched between the Reaction Arm and the 'Lip' of the CARC.

I'd assumed it was the Main Seal had failed (which would probably have meant the Main Bearing was 'dead' too), but that was the only part at the rear of the Bike not drenched in Oil!

I've heard of a couple of Stelvios with a mm or so play at the Rim (usually only at 6-12 o'clock, and not at 3-9 o'clock strangely), with no associated leaking.

There should be an Oetiker clamp around the base of the boot. The part number is 05358230 Clean the area up and if you wish a very thin application of clear RTV to help seal. Theb install the clamp.
