Windshield options for '86 Cal II?

I snapped my stock windshield in half on my '86 Cal II, does anybody have a suggestion for a replacement windshield? I looked at a Nat'l Cycle Plexi 3 offering, but is there a source for a replacement stock screen?

OR, I have a NOS Calafia fairing that looks like a Vetter Windjammer, but no mounts. Does anybody know of a source for mounts?

Thanks for any suggestions...

You can actually mount an HD windshield to the CA II brackets. You just need to install spacers between the Harley shield and the CA II brackets. I used 5/16 turn buckles cut to length (4 spacers). You will need to calculate the spacer length as I don't remember and the bike left in 1993. Installed the spacers to the CA II brackets then bolted the HD assembly to the spacers. Installing the HD chrome lowers also eliminated helmet buffeting.

Thanks, John.

Do you recall what year/model HD, and what are the "chrome lowers", and how would "lowers" minimize helmet buffeting?

The windshield was the old style electra glide type, or FLH from the early 80s, the big one. The lower kit diverted air flow so you didn't get air currents up the back side of the windshield which caused turbulence.

I stayed with the oem fairing through two replacements, but when I eventually replaced it with the Plexi-2, I knew I should have done it years earlier. There's always an argument for keeping anything original, but I think you'll find that the Plexi-2 has less buffet than the stock shield--even if you don't think the stock shield has a buffet problem. (the Plexi-3 is a bit smaller; right?)

Thanks for the Plexi II endorsement!

I've looked again at the NC windshields, and I'm tempted to go that route. The Plexi III has longer lowers (down along the sides of the headlight).

I have a wonderfull NOS Calafia full fairing with Cal II mounts, but they are for the 5-speed, and mine is the auto with the tranny cooler bolted in place right where the mounts clamp to the frame. I COULD move the tranny cooler, but with my life right now, a small project would take months, right in the heart of riding season. Easier to just buy a Plexi.

One thing I've found, though, is that NC only lists a Plexi for a V1000III, meaning a Cal III from '89 or '91 on. I can't find any listing for an '85-'86 vintage Cal.

How universal are your mounts, and did you order it specifically for a Cal II? Do you have a model ##?

I SUSPECT the Plexi's are fairly universal, because I found a model ## for a V1000III (CAl III) which was the same model ## for a BMW and Yamaha application.

I thought the stocker buffeted more than it should, but just lived with it. I HATED the beading along the edge, which put the top edge bead right in my line of sight.

Do you look OVER the top edge of your Plexi, or thru it?

Any additional info on yours would be great,

TB

I don't think I ordered specifically for the Cal2. The shield mount is quite generic. There are two supports on the handlebards, and then two more on the forks. Both of these have plenty of adjustments (length, angle and position). The peculiar shape of the Cal2 bars means that the suppports on the handlebars are horizontal, instead of the more vertical that you might expect. But, it seems quite secure, and I've never had a problem.

In the pictures, you can just see the cutouts in the lowers that I had to add. Otherwise, at full lock the lowers would contact the front crash bar. I used a belt sander to just grind it down.
