I took my damaged tank to a custom paint specialist to get a quote on repainting.
He took a sander to a small section and determined that the chrome was actually a paint finish, not plate.
 
I think that the exMandello now Piaggio guys knew that their new shiny fuel tank lacks the shiny quality that someone expects but nevertheless proceeded along selling it: Publicity photos on the press elevate Guzzi prestige to much a wider consumer audience than the few guys that will be actually buying this particular model to unhappily find the uncovered dark truth. Of them, even fewer will get in the trouble of going aloud in minority specialized forums to do any real marketing harm.
Maybe they are finally fixing it now that the bike is catching up, maybe unexpectedly...
