Anyone else's tank strap not fit around their gas cap? (V7III)

I have found over the years that my strap has gotten quite hard, and is bending upwards at the edges, it also seems to have gotten tighter as well. I use a proper leather cleaner and conditioner on it twice yearly, but don't know what to do to make it stay supple.
