Cali forks stuck in triple trees

I've just removed my front forks for re-chroming, the headstock/triple trees were so tight that even after removing the clamp bolts completely I had to drive a small chisel into the cutaway next to the clamps and also carefully drift out the stanchions - is this normal?

On other bikes I've had I've only had to slacken the clamp bolts and the forks fall out, is there a trick with Cali's that I don't know about?

Probably just corrosion, particularly if the tubes were in need of re-chroming. I would always reassemble them with copperslip in the clamps.
 
Demon, not uncommon. I usually spread the clamp by driving in a flat bladed screw driver. If you did have corrosion, a little penetrating oil would have helped, but they are out now. With the tubes re-chromed, they may be a little larger in diameter, so installation could be a little finicky as well. Does your machine use fork bushings? Good time to replace those and be sure the new fitment of tube to slider is correct on assembly.
 
Thanks for the quick response, I'm fitting new fork bushes when the stanchions come back from re-chroming and I'll try using copperslip too, also fitting rubber fork gaiters to stop any more stone chips and dirt getting in.
Why didn't Luigi just fit open clamps instead of the full circle type? I'm sure it would make life a lot easier.
 
Better check your triple clamps are not slightly bent/twisted from a minor fall.
Usual indication is the fork will slide out more easily from the bottom clamp, once it has been freed from the upper clamp.

On re-assembly, if one fork doesn't line up perfectly with top clamp, now is the time to have them straightened.
