Fuel capacity, range

Why do you think it is a permanent magnet alternator?
Because that's what it says in the tech spec in the workshop manual.
Electrical system - Generator with permanent magnet, 12 volts, 540 watts.

Now normally these always produce full output, the excess is dumped by the regulator to earth. But on my Norge, I can hear the additional loading on the engine when extra lights are switched on. This is the usual case with an excited field alternator only.

As I said earlier there is a marked difference in the heat of my grips and jacket, between 3000 rpm and 4500 rpm. I dont notice the headlight changing brightness with revs though. Maybe the electrical circuits are regulated, but power direct to the battery is variable, as on my Pan Euro, I get 12.5 volts at tickover and around 14.5 volts at 4000 rpm.

I'm thinking that is a typo.
Not impossible, but not likely to be permanent magnet.
