Quick question.
Do your exhaust pipes glow orange while the bikes in the garage and you rev it to 4000 rpm for like when your balancing throttle bodies?

Measuring the pipe temp right at where the pipe exits the head and before the curve I am getting 400 degrees F.

Is this normal? Both sides are doing it.

Both injectors were cleaned today to try and resolve this. It appears this has not really changed the situation.
No signs of air leaks.

Thank you for your replys.

Any 4 stroke bike in a totally dark environment will have glowing header pipes from bone cold, with just a few minutes at idle.

I'd be more worried if your bike melted, true.

Got called recently to retrieve a Ducati 696 (air-cooled) that had overheated.
I had to ask, "Its air-cooled so how did you know it over heated".
Reply, "There was lots of smoke coming out and then it stopped. It won't start now".

When I arrived the (lady) owner told me she started it and let it run for awhile to charge the battery up. (about 45min)

The cam belt covers are plastic you see, and they melted. It had now cured all over the cases and in the fins etc.
It seems molten plastic had gotten between the belt and pulleys, breaking a cam belt and ultimately bending valves.
The good cam belt was sort of welded to the cam pulley.

Moral of the story, use a battery charger. Or if it starts just ride the bloody thing.

It is good practice to place a fan to blow air over the engine when doing a sync. I've mounted a squirrel cage fan to a platform for that task, but even a box fan will help.

Perhaps I should have been more clear.
This happens within 3-5 minutes from stone cold.

What temps are you all getting with your infrared thermometers?

I have had plenty of air cooled bikes and I have to say I have yet to notice glowing orange header pipes in the daytime this quickly.

Its concerning as the spark plugs were chalky white indicating a severe lean condition.

If you all say its normal than I will head out this week on 3,000 mile trip. What could happen? I have a phone and a credit card :D

I think the two main factors in this are;
The pipe thickness, design, and material.
The leanness at idle of current day Guzzi's to help them meet emissions.

The single wall stainless pipe may show the heat more than a painted or coated pipe, certainly it will show more than a dual wall pipe like the Griso.

It is also a very common complaint with SuperMoto's. More than a few people have panicked when their exhaust pipes on the Aprilia SXV/RXV started glowing cherry red. They are also single wall stainless. I am sure other brands can have the same issue as well.
