Griso 1100 - valve adjustment

Hello all,

I already went through the threads available on the forum about this topic, but there are still doubts in my mind....

My 2007 Griso 1100 has now 20.000 km on the clock.
Till today it had allways been serviced at a local Guzzi dealer (last service with 10.000 km).
This time I decided to adjust the valves myself. I have accumulated a good experience with this kind of task with the many bikes and cars I have owned and worked on along all these years.
I used the clearance mentioned on the manual (0,10 mm for intake, 0,15 mm for exhaust).
I noticed I could not insert the gages on the valves before adjusting.
I adjusted the clearance with the mentioned gages. Stone cold engine...piston on the top compression stroke...normal adjustment gage adjustment, with a little drag on the gage.
When I started the engine I immediately noticed a new "clicking" noise....it was never noticeable on this engine before....
I took a deep breath.....openned the valve covers again and repeated the process.... This time - even using the same gages - I left it a little tighter, with some more drag on the feeler gage.
I started the engine again....even though more discret, the clicking noise is clearly noticeable.
I took the bike for a ride and it is running and idling smooth and perfectly....I would say better than before...
The clicking is, however, very noticeable....and, like I said, I never noticed it before...also when the bike was comming from the previous services....
Can it be the Guzzi dealer was using a smaller clearance to reduce the noise and not having complaints from the customers? In terms of valve preservation it seems to be better to have more than less clearance (that causes overheating, compression loss, burned valves,...), so this would be a very unhappy option from the mechanic...

I would like to hear from you guys owning these 1100 engines...Have you been through this? Do you know what I'm talking about?
Are you using the clearances I mentioned above, or are you suing a so-called US-specification that seems to use smaller clearances?

Matias, I've been using .10 and .15 on my G11 for the last 20,000 miles The Griso had 30,000 on it when I bought it.

If I don't hear some clicking I'm concerned and those smarter than me said better a little loose than a little tight.
 
Hi all,

I just wanted to give some feed-back after driving the bike for a while after the valve adjustment.
It sure rattles a bit more but the punch at low revs has definetely increased....I guess there was really some compression slipping through those semi-closed valves before....
Even the engine sound (leaving out the rattle thing...) seems to have changed...

I just did my 8v griso valves and getting tdc on compression stroke was tricky, make sure all 4 rockers wiggle and u know your good, if all other steps r followed. If they dont wiggle they r too tight or your not at tdc, use timing mark too 8) ez pz
