I, like no doubt many others out there, would like to invest in a gps suitable for the bike however, paying £600-00 for a zumo + touratech quick release mounting bracket seems somewhat over priced..... :woohoo:
I see samsung (like several other makes) will be releasing another waterproof phone for 2014. Is it only me or does it make a LOT of sense getting one of these with next upgrade? Not to much glare issues, great sat nav options, bluetooth to headset, waterproof so dash mountable, 12mp camera..... (and yes I know this is not a phone forum) but could make lives easier...

My Garmin has been on a shelf unused for a years. I put a RAM finger grip mount on my Stelvio and EV, and I have been using that with a smartphone for a very long time. I made up a simple charge cable.
I use a normal smartphone, nothing rugged or special about it. I'm now using a S4. The S4 allow you to turn up the touch sensitivity and it works through gloves. The screen is bright enough to work in sunlight. I mainly use software called OSMand+, and CoPilot Premium. These work offline and no cell connection is needed.
I carry an aLokSack, which I can slip the phone into if it rains. Basically a crystal clear ziplock bag.
i can even shoot a video from the handlebars.
I edit routes on a laptop and send them to my phone. Or I can simply go out and explore the forest service roads. I can share routes with others.
I added a bluetooth helmet intercom and I find it a great setup.

One thing I found, and this is true of Garmin also. If you leave the charge cable on the bike, make sure you cover it so it does not get wet. Water in the connector will damage them quickly.

First Garmin was zumo220 since a year back is zumo660
you can add routes and favorites, mp3, mobile, always sound the Nolan helmet is perfect when riding longer. have fuel gauges. one can seek supermarkets, camping.
Garmin has a bit fiddly programs sometimes, you will often find solutions on forums and websites.

So I think it's better GPS than mobile.

comes later in the forum how I mounted the GPS on the Stelvio.
