Background: 2011 Norge, my throttle sticks when it has been sitting overnight, so I have to remember to exercise it before starting. Recently I forgot to do it before starting, and I had the ignition switched on (motor not running) when I rotated the throttle. Not good: that set the "zero" position of the throttle to a negative value, and the bike ran like crap below 3K RPM.
I remember having to reset this on my 1150 GS one time after the dealer had serviced it and forgot to set it (the less said about that dealer the better), the mojo was to turn on the ignition, slowly roll the throttle all the way open, roll it closed, then start. I don't recall if I switched off and back on before starting or not.
So I did the above with my Norge, switched on (engine not running), rolled the throttle full open, fully closed, switched off, then started the bike. That made it about 90% better. It still is idling too low (900 RPM) and stumbles a bit below 2K RPM.
Now for the question: what is the correct way to reset the throttle position?
