Soon I should be able to download service manual etc. and the customization of the V7 will begin (changing rear fender and installing side case brackets). Just wanted to ask how accurate/reliable the V7 850 service manual is what comes to the torque specs ? I recall reading that torque specs given to oil change drain plug and oil filter cover where too high and have caused problems by overtightening and caused thread failure (?). Is this correct and is there other known misinformation about torque values in manual? Side case brackets will be installed to rear shock mounting points and exhaust mounting points so I would rather use torque wrench than "hand feel".

Mine is still under quarantee and to keep it that way I have to service it in official service. But after that I will do the service myself. These things might have been discussed before but I didn`t find them with search;
1. Manual says;
DO NOT LET THE ENGINE IDLE WITH THE VEHICLE AT A STANDSTILL TO WARM UP THE ENGINE AND OBTAIN THE OPERATING TEMPERATURE OF ENGINE OIL.
What`s s the thing in this ? I mean bike idles all the time in the traffic lights & stops so how could it harm it ? Or is it just to make sure bike won`t overheat if left idling too long ?
2. Is there reliable torque values for drain plug and filter cover or is it just "hand tighten by the feel" ?

It was new information to me that oil level check should be made when engine is warm. Good thing that I read the Owners manual :) I have used to check it after the engine has cooled down and all the oil has drained to the bottom. Will be interesting to trying to check the glass when holdin the bike straight :D Probably need a friend for that.
The right amount of oil has been discussed here many times and to double check; it should been about middle of the inspection glass, not near the max as manual claims (?) Quantity in the manual is 1750cc (1.7l) but what I found with search it`s probably too much and I should first start with 1400-1500cc ?

And sorry about the stupid questions.

Ive never found too much difference with a hot or cold engine. I don't use a torque wrench on non critical parts (critical parts being big ends, cylinder head etc). Tighten it and then "nip" it up. You'll soon get the feel. Ive seen too many sump and gearbox threads stripped.

They want you to ride it for ten minutes so everything is heated up. Just sitting there idling will heat the cylinders only. Common sense for tightening and always start with 15-20% less oil than they say.

So common sense rather than torque specs when tightening the drain plug and filter cover, ok. How about other torgue values given in the service manual ? Especially the frame bolts like foot pegs etc. ? Are they ok.

If you're unsure use the service manual, double check the figures given as they could be incorrect. On my V100 there are torque figures embossed on the bottom of the forks advising the figures to clamp the axle. Too many forks ruined by overzealous/ham fisted "mechanics"
