Have finally got the new bike fettled to where I'd like it, with the exception of the feeble, anaemic little 'peep peep' horn. I don't want or need an airhorn. Any suggestions for an improved horn that would fit amongst the framing and attach to the existing wiring?

Have you done a search on the forum for the word "horn"? I just did and there are many posts on the topic.

I picked up a Freeway Blaster from Twisted Throttle.

Yep, I got a Denali Sound Bomb mini from Twisted Throttle, bolts to original location (using doubled up included straps, raised up a bit.) Plugs right in.

Plug and play? No resistors or anything needed?
Yep, here is a pic. It comes with 2 mounting straps, put them together and fasten to original bolt at top of rectifier, then attach to back of the horn, plug in the stock horn wires, and push the button. Fits fine, no fuss. I have also the Stebel/Denali dual tone horn with attached compressor, but couldn't find a suitable location for its size.

Yes, I got a Denali Sound Bomb mini from Twisted Throttle and as you mentioned. Plug and play.
Should take about 20 minutes to install and sound much better than the stock horn.
